This is an excellent, comprehensive article on ringworm in cats and kittens. Here's some of it: Unlike other diseases, ringworm in cats is a disease whose name is misleading. Ringworm is the most common infectious skin disease of cats, and is not actually caused by a worm, but rather by a fungal infection that grows in the dead, superficial layers of the skin, hair or nails. The disease is caused by one of several well-known species of fungus that can infect dogs, and humans, as well. Many people have either had or known someone that has had a ringworm infection (two other common fungal infections which plague humans are the ones which cause athlete’s foot and the condition in men commonly referred to as “jock itch”, although the latter may also be caused by the male version of a yeast infection). The medical term for this type of infection is "dermatophytosis" and the fungi which cause the disease are known as dermatophytes.
