American Bar Association announces it’s conducting an assessment of Kentucky’s broken death penalty system While Kentucky Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Jack Conway asked Gov. Steve Beshear to set execution dates for three inmates, the American Bar Association (ABA) announced that it’s appointed 10 former judges and lawers to assess Kentucky’s death penalty system.

Beshear to stop executions until the American Bar Association can review the commonwealth’s death penalty system On the same day that Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Jack Conway asked Gov. Steve Beshear to double the amount of people Kentucky has executed since 1973, 14 other prominent attorneys–including Kennedy Helm III, the managing partner of Beshear’s former law firm–asked the governor to halt executions pending the American Bar Association’s review of the commonwealth’s death penalty system.

The Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (KCADP) is dismayed by Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Jack Conway’s irresponsible request that Gov. Steve Beshear sign execution warrants for three Kentucky death row inmates. The coalition opposes all executions, but Rev. Patrick Delahanty, chair of KCADP, said, “We are asking the governor to hold off on signing any death warrants pending a complete assessment of the way the death penalty is administered in Kentucky. Three executions will shock the conscience of a state that has executed only four people since 1956.”

Kentucky Attorney General and (U.S. Senate candidate) Jack Conway requested three death warrants this morning. The figure would double the number of citizens the commonwealth has executed since the death penalty was re-established in 1976. Conway’s request to Gov. Steve Beshear to set execution dates for three death row inmates comes just two weeks after the Louisville Courier-Journal ran a series of articles and editorials about the ineffectiveness of Kentucky’s death row system.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Af- fairs is going to build a new Louisville VA Medical Center. The question, however, is where. According to Bob Morey, facil- ity planner at the VA, the locations be- ing considered are the Zorn Avenue site that is home to the current hospital a downtown spot near the University of Louisville’s Health Sciences Center, which has 50 faculty members employed by the VA (it also funds some of the university’s faculty research and 100 of its 600 resident positions) a green field site where there has not been any previous construction and, therefore, has less chance for pre-existing environmental issues.
