Tom Carter's photo book, China: Portrait of a People is technically not a travel guide. Instead, it focuses on what makes China what it is – its people.

"I started in west China and I slowly made my way back east. West China is extremely rural and extremely impoverished compared to the east, so what you have is completely different lifestyles and geography than you would see in Beijing or Shanghai."
