When we considered just the women who never used estrogen therapy after surgery, we found that women who had removal of their ovaries had a higher risk of stroke and lung cancer, and women who had removal of their ovaries before age 50 had a higher risk of heart disease, stroke and death from any cause. Consumers frequently use herbs and dietary supplements to treat chronic conditions that are poorly responsive to prescription drugs or when prescription drugs carry a high side effect burden. Women may use herbs and supplements for chronic gynecologic conditions, such as menopause, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, cyclic mastalgia, and infertility. This review is an evidence-based evaluation of herbs and supplements for these conditions. (free signup required)

Postmenopausal women using estrogen have a reduced mortality risk following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, according to researchers. In fact, lead investigator Dr. Jennifer A. Chan told Reuters Health that such women have "less likelihood of dying from the disease and all causes if they had been taking estrogen supplements within 5 years of their diagnosis."

The Women's Health Initiative Cohort Study was one recent study that included more than 74,000 women and reported a 14% lower risk for breast cancer for women engaged in regular strenuous exercise at the age of 35 years and an 8% lower risk for women engaged in regular physical activity at age 50 years. Physical activity reduces the endogenous production of estrogens by reducing adipose, the major source of estrogens in postmenopausal women, and this may be a mechanism of protection especially for ER+ tumors.

"Longer use of combined estrogen-progestin therapy undeniably increases their breast cancer risk, likely to a greater extent than exposure to estrogen alone," Dr. Collins writes. "However, the level of risk remains similar to risks that many women accept through lifestyles that expose them to daily alcohol ingestion, lack of regular exercise, and postmenopausal obesity." The highest intake of red meat was not significantly associated with the risk for breast cancer overall or for hormone receptor–negative cancers, but was associated with an increased risk for hormone receptor–positive cancer.

those who ate more than 1 1/2 servings a day of beef, lamb or pork having nearly double the risk of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer compared with those who ate three or fewer servings per week. A serving is roughly equivalent to a single hamburger or hot dog.
