The industry always needs more talented AI developers, and I thought I should post some thoughts here to share my own perception of the best strategies for picking up the skills the industry needs and getting into a game AI development role.

Rockstar Games' magnum opus, Grand Theft Auto IV, is so stuffed full of amazing little details it's almost unbelievable it can all fit inside the disk. We almost expect it to rumble and shake, splitting open like a burst appendix, showering little easter eggs across the Gadget Lab gaming room.

I've always been fascinated by physics-based gameplay. Even going back to the primeval days of classic arcade gaming, I found vector-based games, with their vastly simplified 2D approximations of physics and motion, more compelling than their raster brethren. I'm thinking of games like Asteroids, Battlezone, and Lunar Lander.

Ren'Py is an engine that supports the creation of visual novels and dating sims, forms of computer-mediated storytelling. It supports a movie script-like syntax that makes creating simple games easy, while still being customizable and extensible by advanced creators. With no additional work by the game-maker, it supports features expected of all visual novels, like loading, saving, preferences, and rollback.

The following set of rules constitue an initial rule-set for a game I call Nomic Chess. The rule-set is a modification of Peter Suber's (inventor of Nomic) rule set combined with the rules for Ralph Betza's Chess For Any Number of Players.

This is a multi-player game of Chess in which any number of players may participate. This is (in my humble opinion) a fairly important Chess Variant invention, but it happened after I stopped writing my columns in NOST-alga, and it isn't suitable for postal play (which is where most of the organised CV action takes place), so it has been overlooked.

Inspired lately by Python I wrote up a short list of all the Python muds I could find.

If law-making is a game, then it is a game in which changing the rules is a move. Law-making is more than changing the rules of law-making, of course, and more than a game. But a real game may model the self-amending character of the legal system and leave the rest out. While self-amendment appears to be an esoteric feature of law, capturing it in a game creates a remarkably complete microcosm of a functional legal system.

Seems I just can't let go of Mario. This is a prototype of a Javascript Mario Kart-like racing game.
