There is a certain appeal in closing the meta-loop of minimalism in programming. Writing simple, efficient code in languages which themselves are simple and efficient. To that end, I've collected programming environments which are small and self contained, while still useful.

Whenever I need to do bit manipulations, I always check the Linux kernel source. I figure that any bit manipulation I'd ever want to do is also done in the kernel, and I'm usually right.

Commodore computers up to BASIC 2.0 only had a very basic understanding of mass storage: There were physical device numbers that were mapped to the different busses, and the “KERNAL” library had “open”, “read”, “write” and “close” functions that worked on these devices.

In almost all cases, source code will be read much more often than it is written. Who writes the source code? You. A function is developed over some limited time, and once it is done it changes rarely, unless being refactored or modified to accommodate some changed requirements.

Microsoft plans to formally banish the popular programming function that's been responsible for an untold number of security vulnerabilities over the years, not just in Windows but in countless other applications based on the C language. Effective later this year, Microsoft will add memcpy(), CopyMemory(), and RtlCopyMemory() to its list of function calls banned under its secure development lifecycle.

The process of passing a DNA sequence through these independent, analytic steps looks like a pipeline, and we realized that a UNIX pipe could handle the job. We developed a simple Perl-based data-exchange format called "boulderio" that allowed loosely coupled programs to add information to a pipe-based I/O stream.

The Pyjama Project is a framework for computing. At its core is an integrated editor and interactive console for writing and exploring computer science through dynamic languages. It is designed to be a simple, yet powerful, integrated development environment (IDE) for students, teachers, researchers, and regular humans, too.

The rules behind improvised music develop during a performance, perhaps with little or no predefined plan. Where is the comparison with code here? Well, how many times have you sat down to write some Perl without first deciding exactly how you were going to structure it? Perl is great for improvising. The question is, can you write improvised Perl scripts on stage? This article hopes to answer this question.
