I had a funny thought while talking with some folks from Intel about what the future state of of information security would look like and how that relates to what our favorite nerdy show, Star Trek, has to say on the topic. This is meant to be a funny post, but there may be some truth buried in here somewhere too.

An interesting discussion was started over on the stdlib-sig about whether argparse should be added to the standard library, and if so how to handle/whether to deprecate getopt and optparse. Since the discussion showed rather well how people think the standard library should evolve I figured I would blog about those views and my own (assuming I don't mess up and misrepresent people).

The global pool of IPv4 addresses is scheduled to run dry in 2011. Don't count on being able to get new addresses after that, and be ready for peer-to-peer applications to be hit by hard times.

I’m among the people who believe that we’re already at 70% capacity of our planet. I think we have about 30 years of finite resources left: doubling the population to 10 thousand million people, is impossible (not unreasonable to think).

Igor Panarin has been predicting the “moral and economic collapse” of the US for about a decade now; he set the Endtime for the American Empire at the year 2010, and the recent arrival of the credit crunch lends some credence to his outlandish forecast - at least as far as the Russian (state) media is concerned.

For you physicists, and those knowledgeable about this sort of space development, how far do you estimate we are from becoming a universe like that of Star Trek?

You've probably heard of Perl 6 before; this weird new version of Perl that Larry Wall is obsessed with, and that's being worked on since the year 2000, and for which there's still no real compiler. Right?

So, the prototype is working and gives very nice speedups in range of 20-30x over CPython. We're pretty confident this prototype will work and will produce fast python interpreter eventually. So we decided that now we'll work towards changing prototype into something stable and solid. The current roadmap, as I see it, looks like as following.

Mozilla's designers are also currently thinking about a complete redesign of the way the browser looks and feels, in order to keep up with changing usage patterns. The most radical proposal we have seen so far would do away with the standard browser tabs, and replace them with an interface that looks more like iTunes than Firefox.
