Every now and then, a blog article appears on how to do “Erlang-Style Concurrency” in language X. I think this is a very good thing, as it indicates that people are starting to take a long hard look at concurrency. However, there doesn’t seem to be any authoritative definition of the term “Erlang-Style Concurrency”. I thought I’d at least try to give my view.

I've been reading a lot about how wonderful Erlang is. So I'd like to learn Erlang properly from scratch.

Some truths seem to live on well beyond their best-before date, perhaps because "information" spreads more rapidly from person-to-person faster than a single release note that notes, for instance, that funs have become faster.

Although Erlang is designed to encourage/facilitate a massively parallel programming style, its error handling may be even more noteworthy. Like everything else in Erlang, its error handling is designed to be distributed, and for good reason

Erlang has (a kind of) shared memory: it’s called ets.

After a long break I picked up the Erlang book again and my appetite for writing some erlang code was soon kindled. A small Python component I produced at work seemed like a good candidate for my sequential erlang exercises. It is a fairly simple component that removes user/password data embedded in URLs.

So, after a lot of heated discussion internally, I'm somewhat sad to say that Erlang will not be used in future releases of CouchDB. We are switching the whole codebase to (...drumroll..) Java.

There are the languages everyone complains about, and there are the languages no one uses. Having said that, it s time to whine about my favorite language I use quite extensively. Erlang, I love ya, but we need to have a word.
