It's like being a net admin back stateside, but with less bandwidth and more sand. The shifts are longer, and the lifestyle outside of work is certainly different, but the work itself is mostly the same as in stateside military-centric positions.

Last Friday afternoon, the FCC issued a report putting to rest worries about interference from a free wireless broadband service using the AWS-3 spectrum, paving the way for an auction sometime next year. However, opponents of the auction, including T-Mobile, aren’t going to give up without a fight.

Back in 2005, long before we started Envato and FreelanceSwitch, I came across a site called iStockPhoto and discovered I could sell illustrations there. Now I’m not much of an illustrator, but I do like experimenting with making money. So I set about creating some little icons and graphics - mostly leftovers from my design work.

Folks this is bad news for Silicon Valley, which has been living in a bubble, assuming that it is going to weather the global economic storm without being impacted. We have been following this story since last year, pointing out that the tech is not an island.

If you pay any attention to the endless debates over intellectual property policy in the United States, you'll hear two numbers invoked over and over again, like the stuttering chorus of some Philip Glass opera: 750,000 and $200 to $250 billion.

Yahoo is continuing its marathon merger discussions with AOL, sources close to the negotiations have whispered to us, and a deal could happen as early as this month.

I'm facing a difficult dilemma. I've been contributing heavily to an open source project, but the work is unfinished at the moment. Now, a company is approaching me to continue my changes. They want to keep the improvements to themselves, which is possible since the project is published under the BSD license. They also want me to sign a non-competition clause, which would bar me from ever working on and publishing results for the original open source project itself. How would you approach such a decision?

Open source software is frequently used to reduce costs and improve time-to-market. These well-known benefits have caused a number of companies to consider whether there are business models that allow the use of open source software for revenue generation rather than cost reduction.

I get emails from people I've never met, asking if they can pay me money to improve some of my favorite open-source software. That's right. I get money. I get to do something I enjoy. I get good software. And I get to share it with anybody I please.
