Modern cryptography relies on the extreme difficulty computers have in factoring huge numbers, but an algorithm that works only on a quantum computer finds factors easily. Researchers report the first factoring using this method—called Shor’s algorithm—on a chip-scale quantum computer, bringing the field a tiny step closer to realizing practical quantum computation and code cracking.

The Quantum::Superpositions module adds two new operators to Perl: any and all. Each of these operators takes a list of values (states) and superimposes them into a single scalar value (a superposition), which can then be stored in a standard scalar variable.

I've been on a little Conway's Game of Life kick for the past couple weeks myself. Such a simple algorithm like this is great for learning a new programming language.

We prove that the complexity class QIP, which consists of all problems having quantum interactive proof systems, is contained in PSPACE.

I am releasing PyPond which I made as my final year project. PyPond is a digital life simulator in Python inspired from Nanopond.

StupidFilter was conceived out of necessity. Too long have we suffered in silence under the tyranny of idiocy. The solution we're creating is simple: an open-source filter software that can detect rampant stupidity in written English. This will be accomplished with weighted Bayesian or similar analysis and some rules-based processing, similar to spam detection engines. The primary challenge inherent in our task is that stupidity is not a binary distinction, but rather a matter of degree.

This document explores the fundamental theory behind ray-casting. In general, this document does not bother with implementation and coding detail. The discussion will be mainly about concepts, the implementation is up to the reader.

The idea is to bridge the gap between straightforward brute force (a sin I have been as guilty as anyone else of) and the elegant simplicity of efficient code.

Did you ever think about the most efficient method to perform integer exponentiation, that is, raising an integer a to an integer power b, when either a or b, or both, are rather large?

Recently Eigen 2.0 was released. You might already have heard about Eigen, it is a small but very high performance maths library which has its roots in KDE. Below, the two core developers are interviewed about it.
