Are you plagued by Stuck Tune Syndrome? Do you have a song stuck in your head you just can't get out? Take heart friend, for your suffering is over. The Maimograph Machine, through complex analysis and calculation, will find an even catchier tune to counter-act the one you already have.

At work the functional test suite of our application used up quite a lot of RAM (over 500 megs). For a long time it was cheaper to buy the developers an extra gig of RAM than to spend time hunting down a possible memory leak, but finally curiosity overcame me and I started investigating.

Lively s goal is to help people "express themselves with and without words and to do this in the places they already visit on the web." You can create rooms decorate them choose avatars and interact with other people from the room using words or actions. Each room has a permalink and can be embedded in a web page.

The development of civilization depended on urbanization, which depended on beer. "The search for unpolluted drinking water is as old as civilization itself. As soon as there were mass human settlements, waterborne diseases like dysentery became a crucial population bottleneck. For much of human history, the solution to this chronic public-health issue was not purifying the water supply. The solution was to drink alcohol."

This chart looks at the long tend trends of wages and hardware. In the long run, administrator wages rise. How and why this is so is unimportant for our discussion. Likewise, in the long run, hardware prices fall. This trend is essentially informed by Moore’s Law. It follows naturally that when a firm enters the hosting market, administrator wages will form a larger and larger fraction of their costs per customer, and hardware a smaller and smaller portion. So whatever can reduce administrative overhead will reduce costs, and in a competitive market, prices for hosting.

Once upon a time at Atari, I helped the Secret Service bust some bad guys. Let me be up front about this: It was related to my work, it was kind of fun at first, and if offered the chance to do it again, I’d refuse for reasons that I’ll try to make clear.

Oh yah, I should probably have some legal disclaimers around the use of these documents…. use your best judgment and hire a qualified professional to review or customize where needed. Or don’t.

Mutual knowledge is that nightmare where, for all intents and purposes, the known-knows can be extended out to infinity. The ultimate example of this has to be the joke "No, it wasn’t awkward until you said, 'well, this is awkward.'" A situation might be a little awkward, but what’s really awkward is mutual knowledge, created when someone blurts out what’s going on for all to hear...

The Mars Phoenix Lander Mission is a short-term mission to Mars to search for signs of water and a potential habitable site for an eventual manned mission to the Red Planet. This mission is a collaboration between NASA and the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. Sending hundreds of pounds of equipment millions of miles through space to land and operate independently from direct control presents several interesting software development challenges. O'Reilly News recently discussed the project and its technology with NASA's Peter Gluck.

Any great nonfiction book combines education with entertainment. In drafting my A-list of general-interest books about technology, I considered impact and significance but gave still more weight to the reading experience. This is a collection where lay readers can appreciate each entry—and engineers, programmers, and other tech professionals can't afford to miss a single one.
