SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters. The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source. Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS. Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.

Lemon8-XML is a web-based application designed to make it easier for non-technical editors and authors to convert scholarly papers from typical word-processor editing formats such as MS-Word .DOC and OpenOffice .ODT, into XML-based publishing layout formats. It provides the ability to edit document metadata such as the list of authors, as well as robust citation editing, checking and correction. Lemon8-XML is being developed as part of PKP's efforts to ensure that the latest web-based technologies are directed toward simultaneously decreasing the cost and effort of electronic publishing, as well as improving the quality and reach of scholarly communication. Lemon8-XML is a stand-alone system that will serve publishing processes more generally, as well as complement the workflow of Open Journal Systems.

MCM is a novel interview technique that allows for an array of views and opinions on a particular policy or technological issue to be expressed, and their specific effect identified. Like other types of multicriteria analysis,[7] MCM allows one to understand the importance of individual criteria—the issues, beliefs, and values deemed relevant—upon a particular policy choice, or “option” in the language of the method. What makes MCM distinct is that it is highly transparent and, though mediated through a structured process, is sensitive and accommodating to the unique views of individual participants.

A tongue-in-cheek rip off of the speed dating concept, SpeedGeeking offers a fully immersive, invigorating and hilarious approach to meeting people ... and learning about the cool projects, software tools and crazy ideas that they have been working on. At a SpeedGeek, one group of participants sets up at stations around a room to give 5 minute presentations while the rest of the group migrates in a circle around the room to hear these high-speed raps. The result is an obscene amount of fun, all tied up with a good dose of learning about how technology is being used for social change.

Algorithms and software for the analysis of transcription regulating sequences have proliferated. Methods based on phylogenetic footprinting, combinatorial interactions between transcription factors and genomics data appear regularly. Unfortunately much of the research in the field continues to re-analyze the same data. In order to advance this active field, it is critical to gain unrestricted access to a broader range of reference data. Such collections would be useful both for the measurement of software performance and, most importantly, as fertile ground for investigation. Small collections appear periodically in independent databases, often as by-products of algorithm development projects. For instance, the JASPAR database of binding profiles emerged in this manner. PAZAR is a software framework for the construction and maintenance of regulatory sequence data annotations; a framework which allows multiple boutique databases to function independently within a larger system (or information mall). Our goal is to be the public repository for regulatory data.

# SELECTION SNAPPING When resizing or moving the crop selection, it automatically snaps to the edges of the canvas. Sometimes you want to crop right near the edge, but not directly to it. To avoid snapping to the edge, hold down the Ctrl key while dragging — no more snaps! # SQUARE CROP If you want a perfect square crop without having to edit the canvas size, just hold down the Shift key before you make your selection. You can also constrain the current aspect ratio by holding down the Shift key while resizing. Green Fields on Flickr Green Fields by ny156uk # CENTER CROP The standard crop anchors at a corner, but what if you know where you want the center to be rather than the corner? To anchor your crop at center, hold down the Alt key before you make your selection. Like the center crop, you can also convert to center crop by holding down the Alt key while resizing. # SQUARE CENTER CROP To do this trick, just combine the last two tips and hold down the Shift+Alt keys before cropping. Do it during resize, and you’ll get constrained proportions anchored at center.

Postgenomic organizes blog posts into four different types: reviews of papers, conference reports, original research and everything else. It can’t do this automatically - it needs a little prompting from you, the blogger. Why do we do it? Posts that are reviews of a particular paper can be listed above posts that cite the paper in passing. Posts about a particular conference can be grouped together. Original research can be timestamped and archived properly. We’re still working on these benefits... but it’s good practice to start making the changes on your blog now. At worst it makes your posts easier to find.
