growth in web technologies and increased transparency in the literature - and data - may be contributing to a shift in our perceptions of what constitutes a prior publication. Innovative online journals with virtually unlimited space provide researchers with opportunities to produce novel (original) contributions to the literature that are clearly and transparently linked to previously published articles. These include significantly extended/re-analysed reports of previously published summary findings in journals such as Trials and legitimate or incremental updates to previous studies in BMC Research Notes.

SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters. The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source. Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS. Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.

THIS is the kind of thinking I needed a LOT more of when I was in (and pre-) grad school -- and for that matter, throughout my career.

In the Laysan albatross, for example, previous research has shown that a third of all bonded pairs in a Hawaii colony are two females. This behavior helps the birds, whose colony has far more females than males, by allowing them to share parenting responsibilities. It also gives more stability to the offspring of males, already bonded to a female, who mate opportunistically with females in a same-sex couple. Such a dynamic, then may force gradual changes in behavior and even physical appearance of the birds, the authors note.

"I am not afraid of death — I am privileged to have been able to work for so long," says Levi-Montalcini. "If I die tomorrow or in a year, it is the same — it is the message you leave behind you that counts, and the young scientists who carry on your work."

With increasing number of bio-literature search engines, scientists and health professionals either make a subjective choice of tool(s) or face a challenge of analyzing multiple features of a plethora of bibliographic software. There is an urgent need for a thorough comparative analysis of the available literature scanning tools, from the user’s perspective. We report results of the first time semi-quantitative comparison of 21 search programs

The Increasing Dominance of Teams in Production of Knowledge Stefan Wuchty,1* Benjamin F. Jones,2* Brian Uzzi1,2*{dagger} We have used 19.9 million papers over 5 decades and 2.1 million patents to demonstrate that teams increasingly dominate solo authors in the production of knowledge. Research is increasingly done in teams across nearly all fields. Teams typically produce more frequently cited research than individuals do, and this advantage has been increasing over time. Teams now also produce the exceptionally high-impact research, even where that distinction was once the domain of solo authors. These results are detailed for sciences and engineering, social sciences, arts and humanities, and patents, suggesting that the process of knowledge creation has fundamentally changed.

Last week, Pierre Lindenbaum made the bold move of creating a bookmarklet that would find the author's email in the HTML version of a paper and automatically create an email asking for an offprint (authors are generally happy to send copies of their own papers - at least they don't have to pay the postage any more).

Algorithms and software for the analysis of transcription regulating sequences have proliferated. Methods based on phylogenetic footprinting, combinatorial interactions between transcription factors and genomics data appear regularly. Unfortunately much of the research in the field continues to re-analyze the same data. In order to advance this active field, it is critical to gain unrestricted access to a broader range of reference data. Such collections would be useful both for the measurement of software performance and, most importantly, as fertile ground for investigation. Small collections appear periodically in independent databases, often as by-products of algorithm development projects. For instance, the JASPAR database of binding profiles emerged in this manner. PAZAR is a software framework for the construction and maintenance of regulatory sequence data annotations; a framework which allows multiple boutique databases to function independently within a larger system (or information mall). Our goal is to be the public repository for regulatory data.

Biographical Memoirs Published since 1877, Biographical Memoirs are brief biographies of deceased National Academy of Sciences members, written by those who knew them or their work. These biographies provide a personal and scholarly view of the lives and work of America's most distinguished scientists and a biographical history of science in the United States. NAS Makes 150 Years of Scientific History Available Online Over the next several months, the Academy will publish its entire collection of Biographical Memoirs online. Although memoirs published since 1995 have been freely available online, over 900 memoirs published prior to 1995 were available previously only through archives and libraries. Among the additional 500 memoirs published recently online are those of famed naturalist Louis Agassiz; Joseph Henry, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; Thomas Edison; Alexander Graham Bell; noted anthropologist Margaret Mead; and psychologist and philosopher John Dewey. More memoirs will be published regularly until the entire collection is available online; join our mailing list to receive site updates.
