He would not stay for me; and who can wonder?
He would not stay for me to stand and gaze.
I shook his hand and tore my heart in sunder
And went with half my life about my ways.
Housman has been a favourite of mine for a long time, but I've never read any biography and only a tiny bit of his scholarship, so I had no idea of the circumstances of his life. How very sad. How very differently one reads (at least some of) his poems, after reading this review.
