Sebastian Pölsterl has < http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2006-October/msg00061.html decided > to make < http://www.k-d-w.org/clipboard/NewStuffManager/ NewStuffManager > an independent project, and has encouraged GNOME developers to provide input. Originally designed to facilitate automatic installation of Deskbar plug-ins, the NewStuffManager could eventually become a generic content installer like KDE's < http://www.kstuff.org/ KStuff > framework.

A nice < http://www.gnomejournal.org/article/49/tinymail-evolution-and-intelligent-design article > in the GNOME Journal introduces < http://tinymail.org/ Tinymail >, a compact framework developed by < http://pvanhoof.be/ Philip Van Hoof > for making e-mail applications for mobile platforms. I've been reading Philip's blog entries on Plant GNOME to keep up with the development process, but the article at GNOME Journal is a good overview for those that aren't familiar with it yet. Nokia and the OLPC project have both expressed in interest in the framework, and it looks like it has a lot of potential.

Germán Poó-Caamaño created a < http://blogs.gnome.org/view/gpoo/2006/08/30/0 nifty utility > with Python and Glade that determines how much space is being wasted by automatically generated thumbnail images associated with files that have been moved or deleted. In a comment posted on the blog entry, "Erik" posted a link to an < http://alumni.imsa.edu/~eryanv/thumbnail_patch excellent patch > he wrote that adds support for automatically deleting the extra thumbnails.

Glade 3.0 has been < http://gnomedesktop.org/node/2737 released >. With many excellent user interface improvements and some nifty new features, it looks like an appealing update. I'm particularly pleased with the new < http://www.gnomejournal.org/images/181.png unified window > mode. More information is < http://gnomejournal.org/article/50/glade-3-sees-the-light-of-day available > from the GNOME Journal.

Some preliminary plans for GTK 2.12 that were initially discussed at GUADEC have now been < http://www.gtk.org/plan/meetings/20060625.txt published >. Plans include integrating libglade into GTK, integrating Maemo patches, and integrating features like entry icons from libsexy.

Rodrigo Moya has < http://blogs.gnome.org/view/rodrigo/2006/07/04/0 started working > on an automation framework for GNOME called Automato. < http://sflux.sourceforge.net/ S-Flux > could end up being the basis for the GUI. The concept is reminiscent of Apple's Automator. Although I really like the concept behind Apple's Automator, the implementation is extremely poor, and it is very difficult to do anything productive with it. With Automato, Rodrigo could potentially build something significantly better. For those that are interested in task-oriented automation interfaces, there is a really nifty and innovative KDE tool called < http://onefinger.sourceforge.net/ OneFinger > that deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
