Americans had best rethink the "war on terror" while they still have the liberty to do so. For all of President Bush’s blah-blah talk about bringing democracy to the world, the Bush administration has proved that it is no friend of liberty at home.

Watching the pro-democracy marches in Burma both inspires and sickens me. I am inspired by seeing thousands of red-robed monks leading the demonstrations and sickened by the violence they are being met with by the military.

Michael Parenti, in his latest book, Democracy For the Few (8th edition), stresses that a nation's greatness is measured by its freedom from "poverty, racism, sexism, exploitation, imperialism....environmental devastation," and a fundamental opposition to war and pursuit of peace everywhere.

It always comes down to this: we can no longer allow our government to be funded by and at the bidding of these self-centered, out-of-touch parasites. Their great-great grandfather may have invented Gillette razors, or paper clips, whatever their fortune is based on it most certainly was not taxed.

It is unrealistic and impossible to expect a government to abide by the strict letter of the Constitution. Doing so is choosing to be condemned to the very history our founding fathers fought to change. Had they known that the true nature of government is power, they might have thought differently, or fought harder to limit that power.

Before the euphoria gets too high, we have to remember one thing. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have long belonged to the same exclusive club. This club has learned to surfeit its greed for power and wealth by largess from the rich and powerful.

Too many Americans harbor the illusion that we live in a democracy simply because we have the right to vote. But let us be clear about something: voting matters only where real choices are allowed.

A recent survey found that just 1% out of 1,000 Americans could name all five First Amendment freedoms afforded to them, compared to 22 percent naming all five characters from the Simpsons television show. The fundamental fact that most Americans cannot identify the rights afforded to them under the First Amendment is a startling problem.

While the corporate media entities manipulate consumers, exercise a virtual monopoly on the flow of information, rewrite history to suit political agendas, unduly influence the outcome of elections, & perform a myriad of other tasks to advance the interests of those in power, the image of the US as a benevolent beacon of democracy is fading...

Information and disinformation are being stored in incalculable zeroes and ones, promising much confusion and conflict for later generations. In this age, we are developing separate histories, potent and unparalleled, because we have the repositories for them.
