While the Outdoor Film Festival in Grant Park doesn’t kick off until mid-July, you don’t have to wait until then to get your fix of alfresco movie magic. For the 9th year, the Chicago Park District is hosting Movies in the Parks with screenings of current and classic movies in more than 130 citywide parks from June 12 – Sept. 1. Admission is free, and all movies begin at dusk.

When Canyon Lake Riverside Resort owner Mark Smith was trying to woo his wife Kathy, trips to the drive-in movie theater were a must. They loved seeing movies under the stars back then, so much so that they’ve decided to breathe new life into the old pastime. The Smiths started hosting outdoor movies on Saturday nights at their 22-acre retreat back in March. An old-fashioned hayride takes patrons up a Tiki torch-lit road to a clearing above the resort’s campgrounds where a 12-foot projector and concession stand await.

One of the most popular movie-going options of the 50’s and 60’s was the drive-in theater, also known as “cinema al fresco”, where patrons parked their vehicles in front of a large outdoor movie screen to watch films in the privacy of their cars. Drive-ins rose to prominence after the end of World War II, reaching their peak in the 1950’s and 1960’s but declining in later years as a result of increased land values and competition from new media such as color television and the VCR. Few drive-in theaters still exist today, but just like vinyl records and vintage cars, the nostalgic appeal of movies under the stars is attractive to both old and young audiences.
