After we posted the previous article about Sub Rosa’s attempts to obtain licensing for their guerrilla cinema, we did some more research to find out if there had been any developments on the matter. We are pleased to report that Sub Rosa Guerrilla Drive-In is now officially licensed and completely legal. They will continue to screen outdoor movies in various locations around the Seacoast region of New Hampshire, reclaiming public space and enjoying great cinema. One of the most popular movie-going options of the 50’s and 60’s was the drive-in theater, also known as “cinema al fresco”, where patrons parked their vehicles in front of a large outdoor movie screen to watch films in the privacy of their cars. Drive-ins rose to prominence after the end of World War II, reaching their peak in the 1950’s and 1960’s but declining in later years as a result of increased land values and competition from new media such as color television and the VCR. Few drive-in theaters still exist today, but just like vinyl records and vintage cars, the nostalgic appeal of movies under the stars is attractive to both old and young audiences.

There’s no need to limit your moviegoing to the multiplex — not when one historic theater is staying open late and a Chippewa Strip restaurant is showing movies under the stars. No, things are not the status quo when it comes to watching movies in the summer around here. Not only has the Hamburg Palace Theatre started a summer midnight movie series, but the Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant is again hosting weekly outdoor films with a touch of class.
