Work by students at California State University, Monterey Bay will be presented at the “Carmel Short Cinema” film and video screening at the Outdoor Forest Theater on July 19. The outdoor films are sponsored by the Forest Theater Guild and CSU Monterey Bay’s Department of Teledramatic Arts and Technology; the plan is to make the outdoor cinema screening an annual event.

The Los Angeles Film Festival is one of the best places to see new films, both local and international. Filmmakers and movie-lovers alike flock to the cinema capital each year for an unforgettable film experience. One of the most popular events at the film fest are the outdoor movie screenings, held in a Westwood street filled with shops and restaurants. In a place where the sun always shines, everyone loves a good movie under the stars, and this year was no different. Open Air Cinema continued it’s partnership with the festival to provide inflatable screens for the outdoor cinema screenings, as well as an art and music exhibition during the festival.

On June 18th the Los Angeles Film Festival kicked off and will continue screening new American and international cinema until the 28th. The festival draws film critics and aficionados alike, along with hundreds of members of the LA community. Special events include poolside film discussions, Q and A with filmmakers, and the ever-popular outdoor film screenings of old favorites. The final open air cinema screening will be taking place on Saturday, June 27th, featuring the film “Hot Rod Girl”. The outdoor movies are shown on an inflatable screen on Broxton Street and have been widely attended.

This weekend Cinespia continues the tradition of outdoor movies at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. On June 27th “East of Eden” will be screened; gates open at 7:30pm and the movie will start at 9:00pm. Watching an outdoor movie in the evening has to be one of the great hallmarks of summer. It feels quaint and nostalgic; it feels like exactly what you should be doing on a warm summer night—sitting on blankets on a lush, grassy lawn with ice cream or a picnic dinner watching an old movie under the stars.

The owner of a local company that hosts drive-in movies at the Ingold Sports Park overlooking south Fallbrook said last week that the number of cars that show up for each outdoor movie screening has grown steadily since opening night in April.

The show will not go on this year for two of La Jolla’s premiere summer events at the Cove - the Fourth of July fireworks display and Movies By The Sea - both victims of the recession. The much-beloved outdoor cinema event and holiday fireworks had to be cut due to the slow economy. The La Jolla community will miss the outdoor movies as it has been a favorite pastime for the city.
