When the plague ravaged the lands of the Middle Ages, devout Christians believed it was a punishmment for their sins. In penance for themselves and others, some Christians mutilated and flagellated themselves. Instead of driving the plague away, it only housed itself in the blood of the flagellants. Since they travelled across the country, repeatedly laying open their own flesh, all they did was spread the plague over vaster areas, thus killing more and more people in its wake.
