Internet na nov, možda radikalno nov način definira odnos između privatnoga i javnoga. Naime, naše moderne civilizacije bar od Francuske revolucije nadalje zasnivaju se na vrlo jasnom razlikovanju privatnosti i javnosti. Najveći dio kontrole funkcioniranja države, kontrole koja je bitna za realizaciju makar minimalnog praga demokratičnosti, smještena je u područje javnosti i ondje je čvrsto definirana. Područja miješanja privatnog i javnog postoje oduvijek. Postoje neke poruke i konteksti za koje je teško odrediti pripadaju li području privatnosti ili javnosti, odnosno da li čovjek u njima nastupa kao privatno lice ili u nekoj ulozi koju zauzima u javnosti. U internetskoj komunikaciji to postaje sasvim očito. Internetski forumi su, na primjer, nesumnjivo mjesto konstituiranja javnog mnijenja, a vrlo je teško reći da li je ta komunikacija privatna ili javna.
