On Saturday, April 18, an article was published in the Telegraph-Journal. The article discusses the 11 year, $400,000 collaboration between the New England Aquarium right whale team and Irving oil Corporation. Our very own Dr. Moira Brown is quoted several times throughout the article. "Back when I presented this issue to Irving and their colleagues in the Maritimes, some of the questions centred around if we move the shipping lanes, would the population recover," Irving Oil's contribution will help fund our 30th consecutive season in the Bay of Fundy this summer! Global climate change is real and it’s happening now. From the Arctic with its diminishing sea ice to New England’s low-lying coastal areas to the Great Barrier Reef, the planet has heated up over the past century. CO2 levels are rising, and sea levels are too. Animals and plants are disappearing from some places and appearing in others. The oceans are a leading indicator of climate change — they are affected by climate change and they in turn affect the climate. As ocean stewards, the Aquarium supports important research on climate change and the oceans and a source of information.

Right whales have been in the news in the past week . What does this all mean? Well, for many years (nearly a decade), the New England Aquarium, members of the shipping industry, maritime law experts, conservation groups, and the federal government (NMFS) have been working to formulate a strategy to reduce the level of vessel strikes of right whales, the leading known cause of mortality for this small population.
