A building site always influences the design of a home. But rarely does the location pose as many challenges as did the small waterfront cottage on Long Pond designed by architect George Gekas for a couple from Boston.

"Meyer May and his wife Sophie commissioned the house to be built in early 1908. The home was completed in 1909, yet some of the interior details were left to George Niedecken, a man that Wright had worked with in the past because Wright had left for Europe with Mamah Cheney in 1910. The Mays had 2 children while they were living in the home, but Sophie May died in 1917, leaving Meyer May to raise the children. May remarried in 1921 and his new wife, Rae, moved into the house with her two children. Additions were added to the home in a way that maintained a coherent style in order to accommodate the newly enlarged family. The Mays were divorced in the late 1920s and Meyer May eventually died in 1936. The house was abandoned for about 6 years after his death. Having a home like this empty for years, going through many heating and freezing cycles without climate control is very hard on a house. It also didn't help that later owners in the '40s rented some of the rooms out as apartments. Many modifications were made to the house over the next 40 years. "

"Late Spring is a perfect time to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House. I had some spare time over the weekend so I took advantage of one of the few days this month without rain to take an in-depth tour. I thought this would be a good opportunity to do some comparative analysis of the Pope Leighey house and look at its past, present and future. "

"Island Housing Trust's first major housing project is a proposed workforce housing development on Beech Hill Road in the Village of Somesville, Town of Mount Desert. Voters in the Town of Mount Desert authorized the Board of Selectmen to convey the 9.99-acre parcel to the Island Housing Trust at a special town meeting in November 2005. The land will be used to develop workforce housing affordable to those employed on MDI. Island Housing Trust has received approval from the Mount Desert Planning Board for its plans to build 19 houses at Ripples Hill. We are now in the process of raising funds to buy down the cost of infrastructure (roads, sewer, water etc). Those wishing to apply for an opportunity to purchase a house in the Ripples Hill subdivision must meet the following qualification criteria: * Household income for a family of four or less is equal to or less than120% of area median income (AMI) for Hancock County, Maine. Currently, 120% of AMI for Hancock County is $64,100. * One adult member of the household has earnings from employment on MDI equal to or greater than 20% of area median household income (or $10,680) * Qualifies for bank financing, and * Lives in the house year round IHT also has reserved one-third (6) of the houses to be built in the Ripples subdivision for otherwise qualified applicants who work in the Town of Mount Desert, live in the Town, or formerly lived in the Town. This is in recognition of the Town's gift of the Beech Hill Road parcel to Island Housing Trust. For more information about eligibility criteria or to request an application for eligibility, please contact Chris Spruce at the IHT office, 207-288-4496 or email him at islandhousingtrust@adelphia.net "

"Finding an affordable house in the greater Bangor area is more difficult than some prospective buyers originally anticipated, but housing officials say there are affordable homes out there. "The vast majority of houses I’ve seen need substantial work in the first few years of owning them," Tanya Pereira, 30, of Holden, who is looking to buy a home, said Thursday. "At this price range, there’s very little that’s ready to go without some sort of investment." A single mom, Pereira’s looking for a two- or three-bedroom home in the $100,000 range for her and her 4-year-old daughter Sophie, whose given name is Sophia. Pereira said she’s been renting a small house in Holden for the last two years since her divorce, but hopes to purchase a home by the time her daughter starts kindergarten about a year from now."

"BAR HARBOR — Ground was broken this Tuesday at the site of the Northeast Creek workforce housing development. The $8-million project will probably take nearly two years to complete, but the first homeowners should begin moving in this winter, said Bar Harbor Housing Authority Executive Director Terry Kelley. Eight houses are due to be completed this year by Bowman Brothers, Inc. construction company of Newport, and should be in move-in condition six or seven months from now, Mr. Kelley said. Depending on the weather, the construction firm will work straight through the winter or take a break and start up again in the spring. All of the site work on the property should be done within the next several months, Mr. Kelley said. Harold MacQuinn, Inc. of Hancock and Hulls Cove has been contracted to construct all of the roads, foundations, water line, and septic fields. According to the contract, the company has until November to finish the job, Mr. Kelley said. Nearly two dozen families are signed up for the housing project, the goal of which is to provide homes to moderate-income families and individuals who work on Mount Desert Island. The prices of the houses are expected to start around $160,000. Space is still available, Mr. Kelley said. Applicants must earn less than $70,000 per year to qualify, be eligible for pre-approval for bank financing, and have at least one person in the household working on Mount Desert Island. Mr. Kelley encouraged anyone interested to get in touch with the housing authority. The Northeast Creek workforce housing development will consist of 31 small, energy efficient homes, clustered on six acres of land off the Knox Road in Town Hill. Over 60 surrounding acres will be left as open, recreational space. Some of the houses will be “walk to,” and served by a common parking area, while others will have traditional driveways. The development will be accessed by a new road off of Sandy Lane, which connects to the Knox Road in Town Hill. Voters in June authorized the town to float a bond of up to $1 million to subsidize the cost of road construction and other infrastructure improvements on the site. Mr. Kelley has since stated that the housing authority will need to borrow only $280,000 to complete the project. In order to make up the difference in funding needs, three of the 31 homes to be constructed will be sold at market rate, Mr. Kelley said. Construction on the project could not start immediately after the planning board approved it in February because a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was necessary. The DEP permit was issued last Friday."
