"The reason we’re using a hybrid steel and composite structure is because we need to be able to fit these to existing rudder stocks via a high-strength steel hub casting. Our major design challenge was to then transmit very high bending loads from the composite skin to the interior steel structure. The “interface” challenge is a common theme for large, dynamic composite structures and we are attempting a cost effective solution by maximizing the interface area and use of a high elongation adhesive to mitigate shock loads. Figure 1 shows the steel structure within the composite shell. Fabrication Procedure"

"278 Structure of Beam engines Fig 389 illustrates a typical arrangement of an American river boat beam engine of the period 1850 to 1875 The type was practically fixed by the late Charles W Copeland and the sketch shows the beam supported on a frame of wood which has been variously called the gallows frame or the A frame from its shape It will be seen to have been well braced by wooden knees The modern frame is of steel worked up into box girder forms securing thereby greater rigidity and less weight than was required in the wooden frames which have displaced"

" Walking Beam Engine HP @ 150psi & 300rpm.................... 4 Bore and Stroke................ 2.25" x 4" Rated RPM......................... up to 300 Rated Steam Pressure.... max 150psi Steam Consumption...... 150-160lb/hr Reversing Gear ..........Slip Eccentric Overall...... 19.5" W x 21.5" L x 19" H CASTINGS: $ 1,200 PLANS: EN.05 CD $ 50 The Reliable Walking Beam engine is characteristic of the earliest steam engines. It may be used for either marine or stationary purposes, and will run either forward or reverse. This is accomplished by turning the flywheel 1/2 turn in the desired direction. This engine is robust and special attention has been given in the design to give castings of a picturesque appearance. The casting kit contains thirty pieces and weighs about 127 lbs. The finished engine weighs 118 lbs."
