Worthwhile comments:

... I have decided to just post my nuggets that I have taken away from Robert B. Laughlin's The Crime of Reason.

...

Most entertainment is the celebration of disposable knowledge. In fact, when we are relaxing we avoid useful information. This is why some people do not like my Facebook posts and Twitter updates. They are on these technologies to relax and I am confronting them with potential useful information. (Sorry, but I do not plan to stop. Just unfriend or unfollow me, I am really OK with it.) Let me quote from the book, "Soap operas are enjoyable because their intellectual maintenance costs are low."

All advertising is information you do not want to see. "Advertising is Fun's evil twin brother. The two go everywhere together." If you want to enjoy yourself from free you have to accept advertising.

...in their use of the commons, the Itza' break free of the textbook ‘resource exploitation' frame by means of one of the fundamental orientations of human cognition: the tendency to believe in supernatural entities. (See Atran's 2002 book In Gods we Trust.) Atran and Medin show that the Itza' do not treat forest resources as mere ‘objects of a payoff matrix' (as perhaps some of their neighbours do), but rather ‘as intentional, relational entities, like friends or enemies'. For the Itza', the spirits of the forest have supernatural powers of knowledge. Villagers believe that if they fail to respect the kind of reciprocal relationship with these spirits that would be expected of any human social relationship, they risk being punished. These beliefs are reflected in behaviour patterns that turn out to be the most sustainable of these three neighbouring ethnic groups.

The psychologists who are skeptical of religion being an adaptation, such as Scott Atran, nevertheless argue that the basal intuitions make supernaturalism compelling to the human race in a way that is impossible to eliminate. I have pointed to data which shows that though organized religion has collapsed in much of Europe, the slack has been taken up more by unaffiliated theism than atheism. The star in The Faith Instinct is the horizontal and integrative dimension of religion, but it seems that in the developed world a combination of rampant pluralism as well as a general weakening of organized religions is breaking bonds which tie people together in a sacred body. Rather, it is a more atomistic faith instinct on the individual level which persists once the communal aspect is stripped away, a world of ghosts, energies and spirits. The future may be Sedona and not Ethical Culture

  • So far as I can tell, no one has looked in to the same person having different beliefs at different times and in different contexts. That is my own experience. Christian scripture at least acknowledges this cf John 20:27-29
  • Dileep George and Jeff Hawkins' Hierarchical Temporal Memory model provides a hard AI implementation rooted in the neural circuitry of the neocortex that demonstrates how beliefs are affected by context and change through time.

Bob Keteyian has been counseling through the communication styles lens, focusing on the natural language of the client. This approach relies on the inherent processing abilities of each individual and is naturally validating. Each of us is unique and therefore has a unique communication style, which is related to our learning style.

Learning styles theory is at the base of the communication styles approach. The fundamental question Bob asked many years ago was this: How are learning styles reflected in interpersonal communication? Thinking in words, images, or feelings reflects some of the common, inherent differences that drive individual communication styles. It also helps explain the confusion and communication breakdowns that so readily occur. When you solve the communication style conflicts in relationships, you increase collaboration and give clearer definition to other personal and relational issues.

...Amazon’s “See a Kindle in Your City” promotion. Her Kindle was in her purse; she’d crocheted a cover for it out of green yarn. In the past, she said, she’d taken books out of the library, but some of them smelled of smoke—a Kindle book is a smoke-free environment. I thanked her and bought some digestive biscuits and a teapot, and then I went next door to Sherman’s Books and Stationery. I asked Josh Christie, who worked there, to recommend a truly gut-churningly suspenseful novel. I was going to do a comparison between the paperback and the Kindle 2 version. Christie suggested “The Bourne Identity” and a book by Michael Connelly, “The Lincoln Lawyer”—one of his colleagues at the shop swore by it. I bought them both.

Outside, I sat on a bench near L. L. Bean, eating an ice cream, and tried to order “The Bourne Identity” wirelessly from the Kindle Store. But no—there is no Kindle version of “The Bourne Identity.” What?

The present volume presents first, the theoretical basis for these hull modeling systems and second, the procedures for computing hull geometric, buoyancy and other properties by mathematical methods utilizing such models. The emphasis is upon the nomenclature and fundamentals underlying several different methods of hull geometrical modeling with the intention of providing the understanding needed to use intelligently both existing and future tools. Some topics included in the volume are continuity and fairness of surfaces, B-spline and NURBS representation, ruled and developable surfaces, subdivision surfaces, and classic computational topics such as hydrostatic properties and initial stability.

No one denies that printed books are irreplacable. They can be lent, traded, displayed and enjoyed for decades.

But electronic books have their place as well. They're portable, adaptable, infinitely customizable and —whether you like it or not— they're going to live side-by-side with printed books for years to come.

We want to dispel the myth that digital books can't also be crafted works of visual design. Just as web design has evolved and matured, so too will ebooks, and book designers have a new medium available in which to express their creativity.

The Zen Garden is a place to showcase this new way of designing stories.

The book starts with Anne's wedding to Gilbert, which is very small and takes place in the Green Gables orchard. After Anne and Gilbert's wedding, they move to a house that Anne has long anticipated as her "house of dreams", in Four Winds Point, an area near the village of the Glen St. Mary. There, Anne and Gilbert meet many interesting people, such as the eccentric Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia Bryant, who deems the Blythes as part of "the race that knows Joseph." Anne also meets Leslie Moore, who lost her beloved brother and her father, and then was forced by her mother to marry the mean-spirited and unscrupulous Dick Moore. She felt free for a year or so after her husband disappeared on a sea voyage, but then he turned up, amnesiac, brain-damaged and generally helpless. She becomes friends with Anne, but is sometimes bitter towards her because she is so happy and free.

Here are some PDF output examples that give an idea of what can be done with dblatex and dbcontext.
Dblatex

    * Some examples of the features supported by dblatex:
          o DocBook Examples
          o MathML Examples
          o Sources of the Examples
          o Sources + PDF Examples
    * The dblatex User Manual is a good example of a default DocBook book output rendering.
    * The User Manual in DB2LaTeX style shows the DB2LaTeX style applied to the same document.
    * The User Manual in Simple style shows a quite basic latex layout applied to the same document.
    * A W3C MathML Test Suite 2.0 Excerpt (bzipped) demonstrates the large MathML 2.0 support included by dblatex.
    * The DocBook Definitive Guide (gzipped) compiled with dblatex and the tdg-dblatex.xsl stylesheet.

Dbcontext

    * The dblatex User Manual done by dbcontext can show how dbcontext handles the same manual.

The client chapters does not show how to write clients against the provided example services, which is a major mistake. The core knowledge scattered throughout chapter 4, 8 and 9 (like the ATOM publishing protocol which is covered multiple places) should be collected and ordered. So why the four starts ?. I have to admit that my annoyance with the books topical layout is trumped by the authors knowledge and their ability to pack a surprising number of usable facts into this book. So if you do not loose your way in their topical jungle then you will eventually come through as a REST maven."

"The best source for breaking this myth is Jack Crenshaw's series, Let's Write a Compiler!, which started in 1988. This is one of those gems of technical writing where what's assumed to be a complex topic ends up being suitable for a first year programming class. He focuses on compilers of the Turbo Pascal class: single pass, parsing and code generation are intermingled, and only the most basic of optimizations are applied to the resulting code. The original tutorials used Pascal as the implementation language, but there's a C version out there, too. If you're truly adventurous, Marcel Hendrix has done a Forth translation (and as Forth is an interactive language, it's easier to experiment with and understand than the C or Pascal sources). "

"This brilliantly ironic satire is set in a future world where television and computers are connected directly into people's brains when they are babies. The result is a chillingly recognizable consumer society where empty-headed kids are driven by fashion and shopping and the avid pursuit of silly entertainment--even on trips to Mars and the moon--and by constant customized murmurs in their brains of encouragement to buy, buy, buy."

"chronicles the development of the world’s first commercial manned space program--a program that includes an airborne launcher (the White Knight), a space ship (SpaceShipOne), rocket propulsion, avionics, simulator, and full ground support. With ample illustrations, photographs, and behind-the-scenes information, SpaceShipOne provides a full picture of this classified project--from the conception and design to the deals that brought together Scaled Composites’ Burt Rutan and Virgin Airlines’ Sir Richard Branson to the plans for building a fleet of commercial suborbital spaceships and launch aircraft. The story of SpaceShipOne combines the adventurous spirit of Charles Lindbergh, the entrepreneurial drive of Howard Hughes, and the urgency of the space race at the height of the Cold War. Author Dan Linehan, who was there at the launch, lets readers in on the drama and details behind the making of spaceships that will take twenty-first-century tourists to the final frontier. "

"There have been several excellent Apollo astronaut memoirs, especially Gene Cernan's "The Last Man on the Moon" and Jim Lovell's "Lost Moon," which was made into the feature film "Apollo 13." This one is still the most honest and reflective of them all. It extends a tradition of the aviator as litterateur into the age of space travel."

""If compelled to cite only a single book on cartography to stock a desert-island shelf or to assign to the eager novice, this is the automatic choice....Although I have been drawing and poring over maps, as well as reading about them, since childhood, I received more revelations about their essential nature and larger meanings from this one powerful, disturbing, totally convincing essay than from all the other books, articles, and lectures on the subject I have ever encountered.' --Wilbur Zelinsky, The Pennsylvania State University "Combining both topical issues relevant to lay readers and serious scholarship, Denis Wood's The Power of Maps will provoke, amuse, tweak, and inform anyone who has had occasion to use, or merely peruse, a map--which is to say, everyone. It is a relentless entertainment--relentlessly challenging to traditional assumptions about cartography, relentlessly witty as it deconstructs (read: demolishes) the pretense of neutral, `scientific' map-making, and relentlessly contrary in reminding us that maps reflect social choices and serve particular political interests.' --Stephen S. "The findings of this report suggest that the risks of civil conflict (deadly violence between governments and non-state insurgents, or between state factions within territorial boundaries) that are generated by demographic factors may be much more significant than generally recognized, and worthy of more serious consideration by national security policymakers and researchers. Its conclusions — drawn from a review of literature and analyses of data from 180 countries, about half of which experienced civil conflict at some time from 1970 through 2000 — argue that: Recent progress along the demographic transition — a population’s shift from high to low rates of birth and death — is associated with continuous declines in the vulnerability of nation-states to civil conflict. If this association continues through the 21st century, then a range of policies promoting small, healthy and better educated families and long lives among populations in developing countries seems likely to encourage greater political stability in weak states and to enhance global security in the future. "Theory. The development of theory is quite simple and straightforward. Being intended for technicians, the mathematical level is really easy, nevertheless the associated phenomenons are solidly explained. If the reader is looking for a more advanced maths dissection, he has to search a different book, conversely this treatment is the best complement to theoretical study: here concepts came alive and the mathematical set of solutions to equations are translated in real stuff. Materials and technical evaluation. The edition copes with the advanced techniques introduced in more recent designs and products. The previous editions were full of excerpts from manufacturer pubblications or other technical papers, the current one is enriched by new illustrations and detailed explanations of advanced research. Drawings and graphs were the best facets of former editions and still they are, literally boosting reader's learning curve. Engines. A wide selection of engines is avalable as examples, each one deeply dissected, showing typical arrangements and design solutions. This accurate study of construcion details and manufacturing techniques is explanatory since it shows the real article as designed, produced and maintained, focusing on each part functionality and it is real as it gets! "Just as "Uncle Tom's Cabin" gave ammunition to the American abolitionist movement, "Max Havelaar" became the weapon for a growing liberal movement in the Netherlands, which fought to bring about reform in Indonesia. Helped by "Max Havelaar," the energized liberal movement was able to shame the Dutch Government into creating a new policy known as the ethical policy, the major goals of which were to promote irrigation, interisland migration and education in the Dutch Indies."

Also the author employs many one to two-page sidebars on specific subtopics, such as "Sailing Aboard the Ford Fleet", "Bomber Plant Captivates America", "Last Ford Train to Nowhere", and "Death of the Rotunda". Several of these subtopics cover obscure subject matter and I found them particularly interesting. "

"The text in this book is basic support for this massing of pictures of factories that most probably have never heard of, like REO, Overland, Oakland, Marion, Queen, Chalmers, DeVaux-Hall, Ruxton and a great many others, all American companies. At the height of the auto industry boom, prior to the Great Depression, there were over 1,900 manufactures of American automobiles. Also, before the Great Depression, one out of every six people were employed by the auto industry. This book is for the person that knows a great deal about automobiles and would like to go back to the days of Henry Ford, Billy Durant, Walter Chrysler, John and Horace Dodge, Ransom Olds, Louis Chevrolet, Henry Leland, David Buick and all of the other greats that started a passion that would change America and the world forever."

"But not all such bookstores will go to the trouble to order a book that is not distributed by the near-monopoly of Ingram Book Co. Ingram takes the same deep discount (55% off of list price) that Amazon takes, but (unlike Amazon) Ingram often returns much of what it buys in beat-up condition which the publisher has to eat plus pay the UPS cost back to its door. I once got a hardback book returned by Ingram with a razor cut the length of its spine through both the jacket and the cloth. And had to pay for its trip back to my warehouse. As far as Amazon being non-union, I doubt many bookstores are union or pay what many would consider decent wages. Not right, but friends who work in stores complain to me about this fact without telling me their specific salaries. Readers can also try to support publishers directly if their local store will not bother to order a book that Ingram does not carry. Research on-line and contact or buy from the publisher directly. Not all publishers take credit cards, a reason some would prefer to deal with Amazon. Barnes & Noble often will not order from small publishers directly, but often seem to give out their telephone numbers to those that want books from those publishers. Small Press Distribution and Consortium that distribute books for many small presses return even less to small presses that Amazon: they normally sell books to stores or chains at 40% - 55% then take half of the gross receipts of any payment and put the amount due the publisher in escrow for three months. And Consortium charges the publisher a re-stocking fee for any books stores or distributors return. In other words, it is almost impossible for a small literary publisher to survive without massive infusions of grants from NEA and foundations. Or increasingly asking for author subsidies. And this affects writers who want to be published by small publishers. The health of these publishers helps the writers they publish. The worsening condition is also caused by big publishers deciding to kill of their mid-list authors, authors who do not sell books at or above the 10,000 range. They would rather publish fewer authors selling more product (a ubiquitous hateful word now in the book trade). Print-on-demand vendors are a new avenue for authors and publishers. Or in many instances now the author is the self-publisher. A complicated situation. Bashing Amazon is not really helpful. Bash Ingram, bash the fact that mainstream literary publishing is now dominated by multi-nationals. Knopf, Random House, Farrar Straus, etc. are now owned by German companies. Or lament the fact that just released figures state that 27% of Americans do not even read one book a year. One was quoted: reading made them sleepy. Well, then tout reading for insomniacs as much healthier than sleeping pills. That should boost book sales."

"From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. ... tale of an idealistic and naïve British interpreter, Bruno "Salvo" Salvador. The 29-year-old Congo native's mixed parentage puts him in a tentative position in society, despite his being married to an attractive upper-class white Englishwoman, who's a celebrity journalist. Salvo's genius with languages has led to steady work from a variety of employers, including covert assignments from shadowy government entities. One such job enmeshes the interpreter in an ambitious scheme to finally bring stability to the much victimized Congo, and Salvo's personal stake in the outcome tests his professionalism and ethics. Amid the bursts of humor, le Carré convincingly conveys his empathy for the African nation and his cynicism at its would-be saviors, both home-grown patriots and global powers seeking to impose democracy on a failed state. Especially impressive is the character of Salvo, who's a far cry from the author's typical protagonist but is just as plausible. (Sept.) "From School Library Journal Grade 4-8–Intentionally old-fashioned and politically incorrect, this eclectic collection addresses the undeniable boy-appeal of certain facts and activities. Dozens of short chapters, in fairly random order, cover a wide range of topics in conversational prose. Simple instructions for coin tricks and paper airplanes alternate with excerpts from history such as Famous Battles and facts about ancient wonders of the world and astronomy. The dangerous aspect is more apparent in such chapters as Making Cloth Fireproof, and Hunting and Cooking a Rabbit, but also applies to the overall premise that action is fun and can be worth the risks. A section on stickball, for instance, includes advice to possibly flee the vicinity in the event of a broken window. The information is appropriately concise. The knot-tying section, for example, sticks to five basic varieties with clear instructions and useful diagrams. Occasional topics such as Marbling Paper and Latin Phrases Every Boy Should Know may not fit the stereotypical interests of young males, but support the general theme of cultivating curiosity. The authors refer to their own experiences as they tested the activities, lending an appealing personal tone. Tongue-in-cheek humor emerges throughout, notably in eight bits of advice offered in the chapter called Girls. Already a best seller in England, this American edition features several adjustments, such as substituting The Declaration of Independence for Patron Saints of Britain. Both premise and content should appeal to many boys, and might be even more successful when nostalgic dads join in.–Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. "What makes someone start her own library? One of the multiple barriers put in place by major research libraries is that they don't enable ordinary people to make use of extraordinary materials. So the idea of making a library was fed by my experience that college and university libraries' closed stacks inhibit browsing and the process of random discovery. I always felt like I had my best ideas or developed my best projects when I was wandering and looking for certain things, but then finding things I didn't expect. How did this "process of random discovery" inform how you structured your library? Even at public libraries, the subjects I was interested in were scattered. They were either not present at all or organized in a way that made no intuitive sense to me. Neither Dewey Decimal nor Library of Congress as an organization method made any intuitive sense to me. It's like organizing your record collection or book collection at home. I've always used organization as a way to create juxtapositions and cluster little sets of coherency in my own book collection in a way that pleases me."

"Ever read a book that was a few hundred pages longer than it needed to be? Yeah, so have we. Fortunately, there are authors out there that would rather have a concise and effective book than a lengthy and diluted tome, and that's where we come in. Welcome to the lazylibrary, where you can find books on any topic without having to worry about high page counts. If it's over 200 pages, you won't even see it. Read all about anything, in less time, for (usually) less money. "

"Steering a rocket using proportional navigation depends on three factors. The sideways or lateral acceleration, called latax, given to the rocket must be the product of: (1) the navigation constant times (2) the closing velocity times (3) the target sightline rotation rate. Sounds simple enough. The difficulty comes from how you measure the last one, how you measure the rocket's true orientation and motion rates in space and how you implement the control motions. The multiplier number is always 1 or higher and the closing speed can't be zero if you want to have intercept, so let's look at the last factor. This is the one you want to have be zero, which means that you're on a collision course and you now need no further correction. Approaching impact, the target always appears to be at the SAME angle. Early ship captains knew that this was a sure sign a collision at sea was about happen, and which would ruin their whole day! An interesting curiosity regarding the perfect initial lead angle is that if your rocket has the same vertical speed as the target's constant horizontal speed during its entire flight and the target flies straight, you need only to launch at exactly as many degrees ahead of the target as the target is seen in degrees above the horizon at the instant of launch. If the navigation constant is 2, the sightline angle is always constant and the rocket will move in a circle. (The angle you use is dependent on closing speed.) The navigation constant ideally is 3, needing the least correction over the entire flight. In reality it varies from 2 to 5, depending on the motions of the target and the rocket. The navigation constant depends roughly on the area of the fins and the fin swing angle. This can be measured in a wind tunnel. The closing velocity is how fast the rocket and target come together. But if we're only hitting a towed kite or bunch of balloons, the closing velocity is the vertical velocity. You can find this speed using a BASIC rocket flight dynamics program, providing you know your individual rocket's true parameters. Or you can track it using a camera-theodolite. How do we account for the sightline swing? We don't. An operator watches a TV monitor and controls sightline angle. A concentric circle representing the chosen angle is marked on the screen. The operator is to keep the target on the circle (not centered) with it's flight direction passing thru the center of the screen. Automatic roll control is a must, by using the sun's position or a good model-hel"

"physics behind vertical flight is described by the author as 'momentum theory', which was developed for marine propellors in the late nineteenth century. As the name implies, this is just an application of the principle of conservation of momentum. The rotor disk of the helicopter feels a thrust created by the action of the air on the helicopter blades. It must therefore exert an equal and opposite force on the air. This forces the velocity of the air in the rotor wake to be opposite in direction to the direction of the thrust. Momentum conservation, energy conservation, and mass conservation then give a relation between the induced power loss and the rotor thrust. The author also gives details on the 'vortex theory', which is based more on fluid dynamical laws of the flow field of the rotor wake. Emphasizing the local aspects, it reduces to momentum theory in appropriate limits. The author also shows how momentum theory applies to the forward flight of the helicopter. The author also treats helicopter performance analysis, which boils down to determining the power required and available for a range of flight conditions. The rotor forces and power must be calculated, and the author details two methods to do this: the 'force balance method' and the 'energy balance method'. The use of the computer has made this analysis considerably easier for the design engineer of course. The author gives a very interesting overview of helicopter speed limitations and how the helicopter could be landed safely after an engine failure, all of this being analyzed from a physics perspective. The mathematics of rotating systems is included in the book, along with the differential equations of motion for the rotor blade. The motion of the blade is expanded into a normal mode representation and analyzed using Sturm-Liouville theory. The author though outlines other approaches to the blade dynamics, such as the Lagrangian formulation and the Galerkin method. And also, in spite of the ability of computers to solve for the aeroelastic equations of motion, the author considers their analytical solution for the cases where such solutions can be obtained. One very interesting part of this discussion was that of 'ground resonance', which is a dynamic instability involving the the coupling of the blade lag motion with the in-plane motion of the rotor hub. There is then a resonance between the frequency of the rotor lag motion and the natural frequency of the structure supporting the rotor. "

K. Knickerbocker (Leesburg, VA United States) "This is a great resource, however its value is limited because there is no answer key for the workbook. The publisher says that the only way to get the answers is to spend $104.95 on the instructors CD. This really should be stated up front before people buy this book and learn the hard way."

"From Publishers Weekly After careers in the construction, utility and nuclear industries, Wilson takes a lay-off as an excuse to live out his "little boy" dream of driving a big truck. So he signs up for truck-driving school and hits the road with his instructor, or "Trainer," for the month-and-a-half cross-country adventure he chronicles in this flatly written account. Starting in north-central Texas, he and Trainer climb into a 70-foot-long, 80,000 pound rig and head "out there" (trucker talk for being on the road) with their refrigerated load. Despite the book's interesting premise and its potential to tap into the American fantasy of the open road, Wilson's narrative bogs down in minutiae without ever elevating into a personally revealing memoir or a larger commentary on the country and its regions. As he barrels over the highways from Texas to California and then east to New York, Wilson offers some superficial local color and extremely thorough detail on his day-to-day routine, the trucking industry, vehicle maintenance, CB radio culture, etc. He also addresses the challenges of living and driving in close quarters with Trainer, with whom he has little in common, but his companion and their relationship remain sketchy. Readers intrigued by nitty-gritty of trucking may find rewards here, but armchair travelers looking for narrative pull, analysis and insight to America will be disappointed. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist This is one of those books you can judge by its cover; heck, the title alone tells you what to expect. This is the story of a man who decided he wanted to see the country, as long as someone else was paying. So he became a long-haul truck driver, crossing the continental U.S., seeing interesting places, meeting interesting people, and generally having a good ol' time. Although the story is not particularly gripping, it is well written and full of nifty little historical tidbits--think Bill Bryson without the linguistic panache, or Tim Cahill without the eccentricity. Members of the truckers' subculture may flock to the book; others may find it less appealing but still worth a look. David Pitt Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved "

"Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn’t provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her “liver looked like Swiss cheese,” covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, “Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!” She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative “quacks,” blind dates, and other women with cancer—sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among"

"Maine steamboats existed in two different arenas: the ocean steamers that traveled up the coast and the inland steamers, which are the focus of this book. The Maine wilderness once witnessed an enormous movement of people, goods, and mail through steamboat traffic. Originally freighters provided supplies and merchandise for the lumber industry and, with the lack of roads, they were the only dependable transportation to many sporting lodges and resorts. Boat traffic also delivered indispensable goods to lakeside villages and outposts. Eventually sportsmen and vacationers discovered the beauties of the lakes and mountains, and steamboat companies formed early in the 19th century to serve the growing numbers of visitors and businesses. Thousands of families trekked from the southern cities to the interior to delight in a popular Northeast pastime. Getting to places was a chore as well as an adventure, and the railroads and the steamboats did the job. At one time, they facilitated the cycles of life in the Maine woods."

"By linda v. moore (fallon, nv United States) - If you are a one of the many lovers of phoeniclpteris ruber plasticus, (pink plastic flamingos), this book will delight you. It is the story of the progression of the p.r.p. from its birth in Leominster, MA, to its spread throughout the United States. The book is the collection of photos summited to the company on the 40th anniversary of the flamingos' entrance into Amercian culture. Writer Tom Herzing gives a delightful tongue-in-cheek dialog of the dear birds; the photos chosen are better than your average bird photos. THE ORIGINAL PINK FLAMINGOS;Spelndor in the Grass, makes a wonderful addition to the usual coffee table clutter of 'real art'."
