I got Dad a Grace Internet Radio for his birthday and installed it last night. If he didn't enjoy Pandora so much I would have given up. It took more than an hour. Roku took five minutes.

I finished How I Became a Famous Novelist this morning.
  • by Steve Hely
    • He writes for 30 Rock.
    • He used to write for David Letterman.
  • via Terry Gross
Terry focused on Hely's parodies of various best selling genres. There is, in fact, a conflict within the first person protagonist between his cynicism and his non-cynical self. In the end Hely comes down on the site of (spoiler alert) earnestness. It speak to my own struggle against lazy cynicism. In the process there some legitimate discussion contrasting commercial and literary writing. There are views into how modern publishing works: selling a book, book tours, TV interviews, etc.

...possible to glean certain patterns, and one that recurred as regularly as an urban legend was the one about how someone would move into a commune populated by sandal-wearing, peace-sign flashing flower children, and eventually discover that, underneath this facade, the guys who ran it were actually control freaks; and that, as living in a commune, where much lip service was paid to ideals of peace, love and harmony, had deprived them of normal, socially approved outlets for their control-freakdom, it tended to come out in other, invariably more sinister, ways.

Applying this to the case of Apple Computer will be left as an exercise for the reader, and not a very difficult exercise.

Quiz time: Which of the following provisions has been tucked into the most closely watched health-care bill on Capitol Hill thanks to Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine? Is it a) an annual checkup for every Medicare beneficiary, b) a special health-insurance marketplace in every state that would cater to the needs of small businesses or c) new tax credits to help modest-size firms buy coverage for their workers?

Three sided-cloud

There are three sides to the cloud:

1. The authoring tool. I edit and update a feed. It contains a <cloud> element that says how a subscriber requests notification of updates.

2. The cloud. It is notified of an update by the authoring tool, and then in turn notifies all subscribers.

3. An aggregator. Subscribes to feeds that may or may not be part of a cloud.

Romer notes that business keeps evolving as new companies introduce new rule sets. The good ideas are copied, and workers migrate from failing companies to the new and old ones where the new rules are working well. The same goes for countries. Starting about 1970, China took some of the effective rules of Hong Kong (which was managed from afar by England) and set up four special economic zones along the coast operating as imitation Hong Kongs. They worked so well that China rolled out the scheme for the whole country, and its Gross Domestic Product took off. “Hong Kong was the most successful economic development program in history.

Networks of coupled dynamical systems have been used to model ... and many other self-organizing systems. Ordinarily, the connection topology is assumed to be either completely regular or completely random. But many biological, technological and social networks lie somewhere between these two extremes. Here we explore simple models of networks that can be tuned through this middle ground: regular networks 'rewired' to introduce increasing amounts of disorder. We find that these systems can be highly clustered, like regular lattices, yet have small characteristic path lengths, like random graphs. We call them 'small-world' networks, by analogy with the small-world phenomenon (popularly 6 degrees of separation. The neural network of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, the power grid of the western United States, and the collaboration graph of film actors are shown to be small-world networks.

Other energy management startups that aren’t as closely aligned to Google as Tendril, are, for the most part, excited about the search engine bringing much-needed attention to the space. “It’s great to have Google on the energy-efficiency train,” said Agilewaves CEO Peter Sharer. “Over the past couple of years we’ve been largely swimming upstream.” Greenbox CEO Jonathan Gay expressed the same sentiment, saying he thinks Google will shine a spotlight on the sector and attract interest. Even a spokesperson for meter maker Itron, Sharelynn Moore, said Google “adds enthusiasm and validation” to the industry.

.... will Google be a competitor or a partner? Gay said it’s too early to tell if the product will be competitive to Greenbox, but explains the two as follows: Google is building a platform, while Greenbox, which is focused on the software side of home energy management, is an application that can ride on that platform.

We used the Google map, got to the supposed address & couldn't find the restaurant, went back to the hotel, got new direction went back to the same place and finally realized that the restaurant is hidden behind four huge billboards.

It was worth the effort. I had brucetta with fresh tomatoes, lots of garlic, lots of olive oil and a thin slice of parmasan on each piece. Dad had mussels with maybe too much garlic, if such a thing is possible. The tiramsu was light and soaked.

So when I got to Maker Day at Maker Faire yesterday afternoon, I was happy to find that Limor Fried, the founder of Adafruit, was giving a presentation on how to start your own business selling kits. This is a growing business right now, as people look for reasons to teach their kids how to solder, or just want to build a neat device. (Adafruit teamed with the Maker Store to offer the infamous TV-B-Gone kit that garnered a lot of attention at CES this year.)

June 9, 2009 Reported By: Josie Huang Governor John Baldacci plans to sign a bill tomorrow that's aimed at giving the state's DirigoChoice health insurance program much-needed financial stability. To pay for Dirigo, the state charges health insurers a fee each year, which invariably leads to fights over how much the fee should be. Dirigo supporters say the bill to keep the fee fixed from year to year will avoid the expensive legal battles and bad blood. "The Number one thing that it does is it makes the funding source predictable and stable," says David Farmer, spokesman for the governor. Farmer tried to reassure the 9,000 people getting insurance through Dirigo, which is priced on ability to pay, and another 5,500 people who get Medicaid through the use of Dirigo dollars.

The Maine Senate has given final approval to a measure intended to put Maine's Dirigo Health Insurance program on a healthier financial footing.  The House approved the bill Friday, and Gov. John Baldacci, the bill's sponsor, is expected to sign it.

The bill provides an alternative to the Dirigo Health Program's current funding mechanism, a so-called "savings offset" fee assessed on insurers, which is based on how much health care savings the program generates.  Because the amount of savings is difficult to accurately nail down, the system has led to court battles.

Instead of relying on savings estimates, the new system will assess a fixed 2.14 percent fee on paid claims.  The Maine House passed the measure Friday by a vote of 83 to 53, and the Senate followed suit today by a vote to 20 to 15.

Maine health program funding bill OKd

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) By a vote of 83-53, the Maine House has given its final approval to a bill that would create a new funding source for the state's Dirigo health program.

Representatives on Friday approved legislation to replace the savings offset payment, now assessed at a variable rate of up to 4 percent of paid claims, with a fixed 2.14 percent payment on paid claims paid monthly.

The savings offset payments that have been used to pay for the state-subsidized Dirigo program have been challenged repeatedly by the health insurance industry.

The measure directs Dirigo's board to reach more uninsured and underinsured Mainers through a more affordable product.

It faces a Senate vote before it can be sent to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature.

The book starts with Anne's wedding to Gilbert, which is very small and takes place in the Green Gables orchard. After Anne and Gilbert's wedding, they move to a house that Anne has long anticipated as her "house of dreams", in Four Winds Point, an area near the village of the Glen St. Mary. There, Anne and Gilbert meet many interesting people, such as the eccentric Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia Bryant, who deems the Blythes as part of "the race that knows Joseph." Anne also meets Leslie Moore, who lost her beloved brother and her father, and then was forced by her mother to marry the mean-spirited and unscrupulous Dick Moore. She felt free for a year or so after her husband disappeared on a sea voyage, but then he turned up, amnesiac, brain-damaged and generally helpless. She becomes friends with Anne, but is sometimes bitter towards her because she is so happy and free.

The Port of Eastport was scheduled to handle the import of a shipment of wind turbine blades from Santos, Brazil in late April.

"This all started approximately three years ago," he says. "Talks began with First Wind [a wind energy company based in Newton, Mass.], and then moved to General Electric, and they became our client," Gardner says. "The blades will be shipped from Eastport to projects around the region."

Gardner added that if all goes well with the April shipment, he expects a second shipload in June.

The total of 108 blades, each 125 feet long, are scheduled to arrive aboard the M/V Jade C., according to Tom Critchley, Operations Manager for Federal Marine Terminals, the port's shipping agent.

"We'll be using mobile truck cranes, then our truckers will move the blades on flatbeds from the pier into the yard," Critchley said. "There, 54 trucks contracted by General Electric will transport them, two to a truck, to their destinations."

We want to write a function that generates accumulators-- a function that takes a number n, and returns a function that takes another number i and returns n incremented by i.

JavaScript

function foo(n) { return function (i) { return n += i } }

Scheme

(define (foo n) (lambda (i) (set! n (+ n i)) n))

Try

JavaScript

function main() { function foo (n) { return function (i) { return n += i } } ; a = foo(5); print(a(1)); print("n"); print(a(4)); }

Scheme

(define (foo n) (lambda (i) (set! n (+ n i)) n)) (define a (foo 5)) (a 1) (a 4)

For a healthier world, teach it to your kids, your grandchildren, your friends children.

Cough Cough
Sneeze Sneeze
Cover your mouth
Please Please
Let's be careful
How we cough
Let's be careful
How we sneeze
Catch those germs
Right i-in your sleeve
Ah Ah Ah Choo!

www.robotwisdom.com "For readers, the Internet is an embarrassment of riches, with thousands of pages of new text t sift through daily. Thank goodness, then, for "weblogs," sites that scour the Web for interesting prose and data. What elevates Robot Wisdom above other weblogs is the catholicity of its creator, Jorn Barger, who has a healthy appetite for everything from literature to science. The result is a world defined by Barger's curiosity, in which an article about a grand plan to film all nineteen Beckett plays sits comfortably alongside a report on post-Chernbyl cleanup efforts."

"The legislation directs Dirigo’s board of trustees to revamp the program to make it more affordable. The bill also replaces the savings offset payment with a monthly payment from insurance companies that equals 2.14 percent of their total claim payments.
