Insecticides should be used only when other means of reducing agricultural pest populations to an acceptable level fail. Other means including breeding to achieve plant resistance, forecasting, biological control and biotechnical methods are, unfortunately, rarely sufficient to achieve this. Consequently, insecticides will remain the backbone of pest control in agriculture.
