Venom allergen immunotherapy (VIT) is highly effective for treating insect allergy. Significantly more osteopontin is present in persons treated with bee venom, consequently, osteopontin is a biomarker for VIT.

Lake Greenwood experiences summertime algal blooms, upsetting the natural ecosystem. The unique nitrogen demands of the dominant algae (Pithophora oedogonia) makes this the main species contributing to the algal blooms. The predominant form of the N deposition flux is in ammonium (NH4) form at an annual magnitude of 0.9 to 17.4 kg N/ha.

Results of a study show a dramatic decrease of visits of hospitals and health centers of the general population. It is imminant that user payment in poor populations leads to dramatic declines in use of health services. Decentralization with local control of costs and resources could, however, be an alternative to traditional disease-prevention programmes.

Dynamic linkages between farm and non-farm activities are responsible for the current migration and (un)employment situation in Africa and Latin America. Demands for institutional action are getting less due to the costly and oftentimes useless programs that have been implemented in the past. Direct investments into the rural areas by developing internationally recognized agricultural export-oriented industries can be seen as ht future direction for solving many of the inbalances between rural and urban areas.

Data from the WHO suggests that the percentage of underweight children in developing countries has decreased and that obesity has increased. This suggests that developing countries face greater heterogeneity in nutrition-related problems with other forms of malnutrition including micronutrient deficiency likely becoming key future challenges.

Trypanosoma vivax is a disease causing Nagana, or Animal African Trypanosomiasis in animals. This disease had a significant effect on African history by keeping horses and camels out of much of Africa. Isoenzyme comparisons reveal a high degree of similarity in the disease occurring in different parts of Africa.

Insecticides should be used only when other means of reducing agricultural pest populations to an acceptable level fail. Other means including breeding to achieve plant resistance, forecasting, biological control and biotechnical methods are, unfortunately, rarely sufficient to achieve this. Consequently, insecticides will remain the backbone of pest control in agriculture.

Cytotoxic substances are toxic to cells and cause their death. Such compounds are widespread among plants. More importantly, these effects can be used for medical purposes such as suppressing growth of various tumor cells. This chapter provides an overview of the many cytotoxins and the many fungi and plants in which they naturally occur.
