Realtime video editing/jamming toolset built with Pure Data

Purity is a Python library for Pure Data dynamic patching. The idea is to be able to harness the power of Pure Data for audio programming without having to use its graphical interface. Python's clear and intuitive syntax can be used with profit in order to create intricate patches with advanced string handling, graphical user interfaces and asynchronous network operations. Purity uses Twisted, an event-driven Python framework.

This tutorial is designed for self-study, principally for composers. It begins with explanations of basic programming and acoustic principles then gradually builds up to the most advanced electronic music processing techniques. The book’s teaching approach is focused primarily on hearing, which we consider a faster and more enjoyable way to absorb new concepts than through abstract formulas.

HackTheDj! its a tool programmed with the visual programming language pure-data, designed for the audio performances at real time….You’ll build rhythm sequences with particular durations, that you’ll articulate with closed cycling patterns, as well as with other no conventional cycling patterns. You can alternate those cycles between percussive patterns, or continuous fluxes patterns (drones, bass lines, textures, landscapes, glitches, etc..)

Currently there exist two widely used modular systems for real-time audio that can be extended by self-written objects (so called "externals"): Max/MSP and Pure Data. Both come with APIs that are not very different, but as well not quite the same. Flext seeks to provide a unifying interface for the APIs of those real-time systems while also concentrating on making use of the advantages of the object orientation of the C++ language. Consequently, flext allows to write externals (or libraries of a number of these), that can be compiled for both systems (with various compilers on a few platforms) without changes to the source code.

A library for the use with Miller Puckettes open source computer music software Pure Data (PD) is presented. The library is downloadable for free and you can use it under the terms of GNU General Public License. The theory that forms the basis of the proposed library is an improved Virtual Ambisonics Approach. Using this approach provides a computationally efficient implementation of virtual environments with multiple moving sound sources, room simulation, head tracking, time varying listener positions, and interchangeable HRIR settings The proposed library provides a simple API (application programmers interface) to make it easy to use for scientific as well as for artistic projects.

This object library provides a full integration of the python scripting language into the PD (and in the future Max/MSP) real-time system.

pure:dyne has been created to provide a complete and ready made environment for artists and developers who are looking for a free operating system dedicated to realtime audio and video processing. pure:dyne is a GNU/Linux live distribution based on the new dyne:II core. You don't need to install anything, pure:dyne is running from the CD itself. It can directly boot from virtually any PC machine, or Intel Mac, and the optional hard-drive or USB-key installation is just a matter of copying one folder.
