iRedux is a Sound & Music Re-Appropriation and Re-Interpretation System for Gallery Installation & Live Performance. iRedux aims to generate discourse surrounding issues fundamental to music download-culture – those of ownership and authorship. Through a combination of pre-set digital signal processes and aleatoric remixing, iRedux generates unique and original music, utilising the compositions of other composers. iRedux will re-appropriate an album, chewing up old music and giving birth to new sounds – using the original album as inspiration whilst simultaneously corrupting and destroying it.

The Echo Nest Remix API lets you manipulate music and video from the web. We've done the following: rearranged the syllables of a vocal line, walkenized and cowbellized hundreds of thousands of songs in a week, mixed up the hits of a drum beat and synced it to another loop, beat matched two songs, split apart DJ mixes by their individual tracks, made new kinds of music, synced a video to a song, transitioned between two covers of the same song, made a cat play piano. We're making this available as an open source SDK for Python that can currently be easily installed for Mac OS X and Linux. It accesses the Echo Nest Analyze API at http://developer.echonest.com seamlessly through a web services interface and parses the results. You'll need an Echo Nest API key to use this SDK.

The book’s teaching approach is focused primarily on hearing, which we consider a faster and more enjoyable way to absorb new concepts than through abstract formulas.

In some ways, it is similar to both Simulink and LabView, but is hardly a clone of either. FlowDesigner features a RAD GUI with a visual debugger. Although FlowDesigner can be used as a rapid prototyping tool, it can still be used for building real-time applications such as audio effects processing. Since FlowDesigner is not really an interpreted language, it can be quite fast. It is written in C++ and features a plugin mechanism that allows plugins/toolboxes to be easiliy added

The Echo Nest is a music technology company founded by two MIT Media Lab PhDs. The Echo Nest’s proprietary music analyzer API automatically analyzes audio (e.g. aif, wav, mp3, m4a), and generates an XML file that describes the musical and structural content of the music. That representation can help power music visualization, music games, artistic installations, content-based and DJ applications with a much deeper level of music understanding. For developers, the Echo Nest technology facilitates more efficient, relevant and robust audio data extraction.

This paper overviews the principles of the synthesis of virtual sound environments for application to the fields of music and multimedia production and to the design of advanced multimodal human-computer interfaces (e.g. virtual reality). A real-time spatial processor developed by Espaces Nouveaux and Ircam, the Spatialisateur, is presented. It allows to reproduce and control the localization of sound sources in three dimensions as well as the projection (reverberation) of sounds in an existing or virtual space. A specificity of the Spatialisateur project is the concern to provide direct control over the perceptual spatial attributes associated to each sound source and to the virtual space, while allowing reproduction via various systems or formats over loudspeakers or headphones. The operational advantages of this approach are illustrated in practical contexts.

A library for the use with Miller Puckettes open source computer music software Pure Data (PD) is presented. The library is downloadable for free and you can use it under the terms of GNU General Public License. The theory that forms the basis of the proposed library is an improved Virtual Ambisonics Approach. Using this approach provides a computationally efficient implementation of virtual environments with multiple moving sound sources, room simulation, head tracking, time varying listener positions, and interchangeable HRIR settings The proposed library provides a simple API (application programmers interface) to make it easy to use for scientific as well as for artistic projects.

This page concerns itself with techniques for reproducing three-dimensional sound images. The focus is on use of multiple speakers to reproduce complete `fields' of sound in which the listener can sit or move around. This is rather different to HRTF-based techniques which are either reliant on headphones or a motionless listener facing in the correct direction at the `sweet spot' of a listening area. Tools are introduced which also construct more conventional mono or stereo recordings.

With Recent advances in computational power, physical modelling has become increasingly viable for real time musical synthesis. Cymatic is a new computer based musical instrument, which utilises the mass-interaction scheme of physical modelling to synthesise modular musical instruments in real time. Real time control of Cymatic is provided via haptic interfaces, which allow the user to experience the ‘physicality’ of the instrument with the sense of touch. Physical contours and time varying forces on the instrument can be ‘felt’ by the user and vibrotactile sensations simulate the vibrations of the resonating instrument.

JASS (Java Audio Synthesis System) is a unit generator based audio synthesis programming environment written in pure Java. Java 1.5 is required. The environment is based on a foundation structure consisting of a small number of Java interfaces and abstract classes, which implement the functionality needed to create filter-graphs, or "patches". Unit generators are created by extending the abstract classes and implementing a single method. Patches are created by linking together unit generators in arbitrary complex graph structures. Patches can be rendered in real-time with special unit generators that communicate with the audio hardware, which have been implemented using the JavaSound API and through JNI for some platforms.

Serpent is the scripting language for Aura, a platform for computer music, animation, and interactive systems. Serpent was designed and implemented as a stand-alone, general purpose interpreter. Serpent is perhaps ideal as a game scripting language due to its real-time design and support for external C++ objects and C functions. It is open source, and I would be happy to share code as well as future design and development with others.

MidiShare has been designed in 1989 in response to problems commonly met in the development of realtime music software. It provides high level services to developers and ensures platform independance since it supports GNU/Linux, MacOS and Windows. The MidiShare development kit supports a great variety of programming languages: C, C++, Common Lisp, Pascal, Java... Two additional libraries are also provided to facilitate the development of musical applications: a MIDI files management library and a Player library intended to develop multi-tracks MidiShare sequencers.

An extensive set of head-related transfer function (HRTF) measurements of a KEMAR dummy head microphone was completed in May, 1994. The measurements consist of the left and right ear impulse responses from a Realistic Optimus Pro 7 loudspeaker mounted 1.4 meters from the KEMAR. Maximum length (ML) pseudo-random binary sequences were used to obtain the impulse responses at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. A total of 710 different positions were sampled at elevations from -40 degrees to +90 degrees. Also measured were the impulse response of the speaker in free field and several headphones placed on the KEMAR. This data is being made available to the research community on the Internet via anonymous FTP and the World Wide Web.

Virtual Choreographer (VirChor) is an open source real time 3D engine that relies on an XML-based definition of 3D scenes with graphic and sonic components. VirChor is well-documented and offers facilities such as high dimension particle systems through GPGPU, MPEG4 facial and skeletal character animation, vertex and pixel shader support, audio source localization, and collision detection. VirChor runs on Windows, Mac OS/X, and Linux and uses OpenGL for interactive rendering, and POVray or Renderman for off-line rendering. Sound computation is designed for communication through OSC protocole with PureData or Max/MSP.

TTtrigger is a program for playing sound effects in connection with a theater or other show. The concept is to be able to play various sounds effects or music out to different hardware ports on e.g. a multi channel audio interface. The sounds could thereafter be mixed together on a analog mixer allowing fast and easy control of audio levels on different speaker sets.
