Over the past 16 years since the publication of its first edition, The Prokaryotes has become an important part of the canon of microbiology. At the inception of the second edition in 1992, the editors made the bold decision to organize the work according the new paradigm of molecular phylogeny. It has since become abundantly clear that that decision was an appropriate one.
