If you’re blogging for business, monitoring and analyzing your blog stats must become part of your blogging routine. Personally I use three primary tools to measure the effectiveness of my blog. I monitor my blog traffic with Google Analytics, review the least utilized, most promising keywords with HitTail, and use FeedBurner Pro to analyze my blog’s feed.

HitTail - a useful statistics service « musings

HitTail is a cool statistics service with a slight difference. They don’t track visitors once they arrive on your site, they only track the source of visitors that have arrived via a search engine, and then monitor what keywords the visitor searched for… Why is this beneficial? Well, this all relates to the Long Tail theory, where (in THIS instance) the least popular keywords actually make up most of your referrers.

Finally, I’ve recently discovered HitTail through Problogger and love it - it’s a free service that tracks all the search keywords leading people to your site, then suggests keywords for you to blog about. Really useful tool and saves me a lot of time hunting through my sitemeter results (plus I can save keywords, then add them to my suggestions or my to-do list right on HitTail). Just thought you might find it useful as well!

Hittail provides updates every 10 minutes or so and gives you insight into what keywords are being used to find your site. This is a pretty new program but I love it and check daily. On high-traffic days (like today!) I check every couple hours. Hittail lets you know what keywords are being used in the search engines and gives you a rough quality score to determine how you stack up.
