The purpose of this tutorial is to show you how to set up a kernel that is highly tuned for your CPU, in this case a Pentium 4 with hyperthreading for a workstation.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we covered why you should consider using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for your telephony solution. In this article, we will: * Sign-up for Amazon Web Services (AWS); * Setup the Elasticfox Firefox Extension for Amazon EC2; * Configure an Amazon EC2 instance; * Assign an Elastic IP address to the instance; * Install Asterisk 1.6; * Create Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes for the Asterisk configuration, voicemail and logs storage.

What Ubuntu Server *could* be

Ubuntu Server should be a product that delivers a cool, integrated, sysadmin-friendly server experience. I want us to innovate. I want us to boldly go where nobody has gone before. I want Ubuntu Server to be something, rather than be anything. We should have a product that implements industry best practices, rather than just making them possible. Having configuration files under a revision control system, users always defined in a local or distant LDAP directory, screen on network shells, LVM always configured… We should deliver and integrate the right software solutions rather than just making all options available.

deep thoughts by sysadmins: Steve Stady and Seth Vidal Licensed under Creative Commons By Attribution license. 1. do it the same, over and over and over again 2. Backups are sacred! If you do not know if your backups are current, then test them by restoring the data and comparing. 3. Do not make many, tiny partitions, make a smaller number of larger partitions, instead. etc.
