Policy makers need to better understand the networks they regulate, but academic network research can be a tough task. Google, New America, and PlanetLab have created Measurement Lab, an open group of distributed servers meant to make research into Internet speeds, latency, jitter, and BitTorrent-blocking easier.
This project examines security software for Windows OS that implement application-based security model – i.e. most of the products called Internet security suites, personal firewalls, HIPS, behavior blockers and similar products on the market. With Apple's market share increasing, forensic investigators are being called on to scour Macs and other Apple products for evidence of nefarious deeds. Purdue's Cyber Forensics Lab are giving investigators the necessary training to sort out the bits hiding in confiscated Macs.
Security researcher Charlie Miller would recommend Macs over Windows PCs because there are fewer malware threats. However, that doesn't mean Mac OS X couldn't be made more secure.
