At the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting, Berkeley's Judy Scotchmoor introduced a new web resource called Understanding Science that's intended to change the way that the nature and process of science are presented to students.

If you look at the SSD market today, you’d assume that it’s very different from what it was just six months ago when the X25-M launched. People are worried that the Intel drive has issues with degrading performance over time. Some vendors are now shipping “revised” JMicron drives with multiple controllers, supposedly fixing all of the problems I talked about last year. I hate to break it to you guys. As different as the world may seem today, it’s all very much the same. The Intel drive is still the best of the best. Yes, it, and other SSDs do get slower over time and later in this article I’ll explain why it happens and why it’s not as big of a deal as you’d think. The issues I complained about with the JMicron drives from last year are still alive and well today; they’re just somewhat occluded.

The boot management tool, once in place, refused to spot the main Vista partition on our hard drive, and thus wouldn't boot. If we booted straight to CD and loaded up the Hard Disk Manager from there, we could find a way in, but this slowed down the workings of the computer enormously.

Many Linux users and enthusiasts are said to have a religious devotion to their operating system of choice. But does Linux itself have almost a Zen-like quality? The monks of the White Wind Zen Community would likely say so.

What Ubuntu Server *could* be

Ubuntu Server should be a product that delivers a cool, integrated, sysadmin-friendly server experience. I want us to innovate. I want us to boldly go where nobody has gone before. I want Ubuntu Server to be something, rather than be anything. We should have a product that implements industry best practices, rather than just making them possible. Having configuration files under a revision control system, users always defined in a local or distant LDAP directory, screen on network shells, LVM always configured… We should deliver and integrate the right software solutions rather than just making all options available.

Security researcher Charlie Miller would recommend Macs over Windows PCs because there are fewer malware threats. However, that doesn't mean Mac OS X couldn't be made more secure.

Hal Halpin is fighting the good fight for consumers, and the Entertainment Consumer Association has told the FTC it wants two things: full disclosure, on the box, of included DRM, as well as a standardized End-User Licensing Agreement. What's crazy? They might get it. Ars speaks to the man who wants you to have a voice in the gaming industry.
