What would you say if I told you my religion teaches that white people were created by God first, and that God realized that these whites needed helpers, and so he created other races strictly for the benefit of whites; not only that, but when faced with temptation, the weaker, non-white races gave in to it and persuaded the whites to succumb also?

We are left, when confronted by such self-praising buffoons, with the feeling that they are attempting to cover up massive gobs of insecurity that have taken insidious root within their psyches. What are we to do, then, when the person so concerned with the way they are perceived is the Judeo-Christian god?

What is it with churches and inane little announcements like this? You cannot safely drive through your town, or even along the national highways, without your eyes and brains being viciously assaulted by them. And the radio! My God, it's a jungle of fatuousness out there!

As a former minister and Christian, I am very familiar with the argument from design, having used it countless times myself as a means of proving the reasonableness of believing in God. A very simple form of this argument is often called the "watchmaker" argument. I shall now destroy it before your very eyes.

Again, driving home from work, listening to the radio, switching between music and talk, happen upon a sermon delivered by the recently departed Dr. James Kennedy, he of Evangelism Explosion fame.

While listening to The Bible Answer Man on my way home from work (seeking grist for my atheist mill), I heard the BA describe an allegedly faith-building story about his guest on the program, one Joni Eareckson Tada.

Sure, you are familiar with the Roman Catholic sale of indulgences in the fourteenth century, but are you aware that heaven is still for sale?

When I was a minister in the service of Christianity, a significant aspect of my job was explaining away biblical absurdities. If the Bible said something that was illogical or just plain wrong by modern standards, which it frequently does, then I would search the commentaries for the most reasonable-sounding explanation. It could not really be an absurdity, because the Bible is the Word of God, went my thinking.

With the advent of technology, we have been made enormously wealthy by the standards of just 50 years ago. Along with our relative wealth have come significant quantities of free time, time to wonder about and even yearn for a purpose to our lives. Just a few decades ago, people might have scoffed at this need: Purpose? My purpose is to damn well put food on the table.

The human animal is perhaps unique in its capacity to envision possible futures for itself. This can be a blessing or a curse. One the one hand, we can set ourselves goals, conceive a plan to achieve them, and act in such a way as to transform those goals into a real present. On the down side, we can worry about all the things that could go wrong over which we have no control whatsoever.
