Cycling is a much safer form of exercise than, say, running. Keen runners have a 60% chance of an injury which keeps them off the road in any one year. Appalling. Safer it may be but cycling is not without its obvious issues. One client has been knocked off his bike at least once a year for the last 4 years. I get used to seeing him limp in, grazed and battered, for a chiropractic check-up after his latest collision. He insists that none are his fault but the fault of the feckless motorists crossing his path.

Over the counter painkillers containing codeine can become addictive in just three days, the government’s drug watchdog has said The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced new advice on over-the-counter (OTC) medicines containing codeine and dihydrocodeine (DHC) to minimise the risk of overuse and addiction.

The recently published NICE guidelines gives manipulation the thumbs up. Manipulation as done done by BCA chiropractors, osteopaths and specially trained physio’s has been used for decades to treat back pain but only recently has it been gaining recognition. Some bloggers have criticised the fact that a chiropractor sat on the NICE review board and some pain management consultants have questioned the conclusion.

A report yesterday today in the Daily Telegraph highlights poor care in NHS hospitals. The Patients Association claims hundreds of thousands have suffered from poor standards of nursing, often with ‘neglectful, demeaning, painful and sometimes downright cruel’ treatment. Apparently 2% of patients rate their care as poor.

Having returned from holiday today I realise that Malcolm Gladwell is right. I read his book Blink. He writes about the power of immediate observation leading to correct conclusions far more often than we believe. We often wait for more information to back up our hunches before acting on them, when in fact we should trust ourselves more. For instance, if someone with back pain comes in to see me, I usually know what is causing it within a minute or two of them explaining what is wrong, without even examining them.

I am 21 years old. I have been having back pain since I was sixteen but after I had my son my back has started to spasm. I have been experiencing pain in my hips that is bad enough that I can't lay down without pain. The pain sometimes follows down to the back of my legs. They start to feel extremely warm and then go cold shortly after. I have never heard of this and can't afford for this to get severe enough that I can't pick up my son which has happened on a number of occasions. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

've been getting pain in my lower back for quite some time now since I started running 3 years ago, but I ran a 5k a couple of days ago and it was killing me during the race, what is causing it and what can I do to stop/prevent it?

initially I had some back pain when getting up after sitting for a while. few weeks later I noticed pain in my left bum after being on the elliptical machine for an hour. I stopped going on elliptical but kept running on the treadmill. It has not gotten better? what should I do? could it be sciatica?

I have congenital (hereditary) flat feet and it's always caused me knee or ankle problems but over the past year or so, it's manifested into lower back pain as well. At least that's what I assumed originally. Now I'm not so sure because I've noticed that I only get the pain I'm referring to when I recline while sitting and lean to my right and, more recently, when I sleep on my right side.
