Sharing data is good. But sharing your own data? That can get complicated. As two research communities who held meetings in May on the issue report their proposals to promote data sharing in biology, a special issue of Nature examines the cultural and technical hurdles that can get in the way of good intentions.

About Rapid Research Notes

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/rrn/about

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at NIH, is a national resource for molecular biology information and as such has a mandate to develop new products and services to meet the needs of the biomedical research community. Upon the recommendation of public advisors, NCBI developed an archival service to support research shared through new venues for rapid communication enabled by the internet. Introduced in August 2009, the archive, called Rapid Research Notes (RRN), allows users to access and cite research that is provided through participating publisher programs designed for immediate communication.

The RRN archive was prompted in part by the spring 2009 worldwide outbreak of H1N1 influenza and the call for a means to quickly share research information about this critical and emergent public health threat. To address the influenza information sharing need, the Public Library of Science developed PLoS Currents: Influenza, the first collection being archived in RRN. NCBI expects the RRN archive to expand over time to include additional collections in other biomedical fields and other critical topics.

http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/87/8/09-069237/en/index.html

Impaired access to research information in health-related fields is not solely the preserve of developing countries but it is hugely exacerbated in poorer regions of the world. While these regions bear the brunt of the world’s health problems, only 10% of health research effort goes into these areas (referred to as the “10/90 gap”).1 If we are going to achieve what the World Conference on Science held by UNESCO and the International Council for Science in 1999 termed the true “orienting of scientific progress towards meeting the needs of humankind”, then we must improve the research effort on the health problems that afflict the greatest part of the world’s population. That cannot happen until research communication is optimized: at the turn of the new millennium more than half of research-based institutions in lower-income countries had no current subscriptions at all to international research journals.2

Tim Ingoldsby, Director of Strategic Initiatives & Publisher Relations, American Institute of Physics; Philip M. Davis, PhD Candidate, Department of Communication, Cornell University; Jocalyn Clark, PhD, Senior Editor, PLoS Medicine

There is growing attention and obligation to disseminate research in open-access forums. Open access provides free availability to and unrestricted use of scientific literature. Speakers will discuss recent research that investigates the impact of open-access publishing and self-archiving on citation, readership, accessibility, and the influence of scientific articles.
Moderator: Catherine Nancarrow, Managing Editor, PLoS Computational Biology, PLoS Genetics, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLoS Pathogens

John Wilbanks, VP, Science, Creative Commons; Christopher Kenneally, Director, Author Relations, Copyright Clearance Center; Dale D. Berkley, PhD JD, Senior Attorney, National Institutes of Health

Find out what science editors need to know about copyright and how it has traditionally been managed, as well as the various practices in place today (copyright transfer, license to publish, creative commons) and what they mean for authors and publishers (rights, liabilities, permissions). Discover copyright myths and facts, and learn what policies might be on the horizon (derivative use, attributions).

Institutional repositories (IR) are tools to support, disseminate, and showcase the scholarly communications and intellectual life of an institution. A successful repository requires planning and a defined focus, as well as an attractive name and design. To achieve success, the IR must serve faculty on faculty's terms; the librarian's role is to collaborate with faculty and ensure that the services of the IR meet faculty needs. Foster, Bankier, and Wiley offered strategies for success drawn from their work creating successful institutional repositories.

http://www.scienceprogress.org/2008/08/open-up/

MCM is a novel interview technique that allows for an array of views and opinions on a particular policy or technological issue to be expressed, and their specific effect identified. Like other types of multicriteria analysis,[7] MCM allows one to understand the importance of individual criteria—the issues, beliefs, and values deemed relevant—upon a particular policy choice, or “option” in the language of the method. What makes MCM distinct is that it is highly transparent and, though mediated through a structured process, is sensitive and accommodating to the unique views of individual participants.

A tongue-in-cheek rip off of the speed dating concept, SpeedGeeking offers a fully immersive, invigorating and hilarious approach to meeting people ... and learning about the cool projects, software tools and crazy ideas that they have been working on. At a SpeedGeek, one group of participants sets up at stations around a room to give 5 minute presentations while the rest of the group migrates in a circle around the room to hear these high-speed raps. The result is an obscene amount of fun, all tied up with a good dose of learning about how technology is being used for social change.

http://www.datasealofapproval.org/

Anyone who archives his or her data also would like them to be found, recognized and still usable in the future. That is not a matter of course with electronic data. After all, hardware and software are changing all the time. Making data future-proof can be accomplished by ensuring that data sets and metadata meet certain guidelines. In consultation with large data producers and managers, DANS laid down what those guidelines need to be in its 'Datakeurmerk', which will continue to be developed further.

The quality guidelines of this seal of approval for data are intended to ensure that in the future, research data can still be processed in a high-quality and reliable manner, without this entailing new thresholds, regulations or high costs. They may be of interest to research institutions, to organizations that archive data, and to users of those data. The document that lays down the quality guidelines of the 'Datakeurmerk', can be downloaded here.
