About « Experimental Turk

http://experimentalturk.wordpress.com/about

About

The goal of this blog is reporting evidence concerning the reliability of Amazon Mechanical Turk as an online subject pool for experiments in economics, psychology, and social sciences in general.

Using AMT to run web-based experiments allows researchers to obtain large quantities of data in a cheap and efficient way. However, there is lack of evidence regarding the actual reliability of AMT’s workforce as a subject pool; as any new instrument, AMT requires to be tested thoroughly in order to be used confidently. This blog aims at collecting any individual effort made in order to validate AMT as a research tool. It reports results from experiments that increase or decrease the reliability of AMT as an online subject pool, as well as general guidance for running experiments through this service.

http://www.rin.ac.uk/our-work/using-and-accessing-information-resources/disciplinary-case-studies-life-sciences

This report by the British Library and the Research Information Network (RIN) provides a unique insight into how information is used by researchers across life sciences. Undertaken by the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the UK Digital Curation Centre and the University of Edinburgh’s Information Services, the report concludes that ‘one-size-fits-all’ information and data sharing policies are not achieving scientifically productive and cost-efficient information use in life sciences.

The report was developed using an innovative approach to capture the day-to-day patterns of information use in seven research teams from a wide range of disciplines, from botany to clinical neuroscience. The study undertaken over 11 months and involving 56 participants found that there is a significant gap between how researchers behave and the policies and strategies of funders and service providers. This suggests that the attempts to implement such strategies have had only a limited impact. Key findings from the report include:

    * Researchers use informal and trusted sources of advice from colleagues, rather than institutional service teams, to help identify information sources and resources
    * The use of social networking tools for scientific research purposes is far more limited than expected
    * Data and information sharing activities are mainly driven by needs and benefits perceived as most important by life scientists rather than ‘top-down’ policies and strategies
    * There are marked differences in the patterns of information use and exchange between research groups active in different areas of the life sciences, reinforcing the need to avoid standardised policy approaches

Income Models for Supporting Open Access (SPARC)

http://www.arl.org/sparc/publisher/incomemodels

Developing a sound business model is a critical concern of publishers considering open-access distribution. Selecting the model appropriate to a particular journal will depend not only on the expense hurdle that must be cleared, but also on the publisher’s mission objectives, size, business management resources, risk tolerance, tax status, and institutional or corporate affiliation.

This Web site and accompanying guide provide an overview of income models currently being used to support the open-access distribution of peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific journals. These resources will be a useful tool both for publishers exploring new potential sources of income and for libraries weighing where to direct meager library funds.

https://www.scientificlinux.org

SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.

The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.

Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS.

Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.

As his title suggests, Jeremy Taylor is firmly in the second camp. A TV science producer, he was driven to distraction by a stream of documentaries showing cute chimps displaying apparently human traits such as empathy, tool-making and language. Egged on by a tendency to anthropomorphism, some primatologists have argued that the difference between chimpanzee and human cognition is simply a matter of degree. Taylor is having none of it: "To call the difference quantitative between alarm calls, food-specific grunts, whoops and Shakespeare; between night nests and twig tools, and the A380 passenger jet; and between retribution and food sharing and Aristotle and Mill is, to my mind, stretching a point, and a bit of an insult to human ingenuity and culture."

http://web.utk.edu/~grissino/default.html

My goal is to make available as much information about dendrochronology as I can possibly find on the Internet, from the basics of tree-ring dating, to reference and bibliographic information, to products and supplies, to books, and more! My mission was born from an overwhelming need among dendrochronologists for a permanent repository of information that was free to the public, easily understandable, and as comprehensive as humanly possible. Come back and visit from time to time to learn more about new or updated software, new educational tools, new institutions conducting tree-ring research, new publications, and more!

http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all~content=a909530866

Institutional repositories (IR) are tools to support, disseminate, and showcase the scholarly communications and intellectual life of an institution. A successful repository requires planning and a defined focus, as well as an attractive name and design. To achieve success, the IR must serve faculty on faculty's terms; the librarian's role is to collaborate with faculty and ensure that the services of the IR meet faculty needs. Foster, Bankier, and Wiley offered strategies for success drawn from their work creating successful institutional repositories.

PET: PHP Entrez Tools.

http://www.cotch.net/assed

PET is a library of PHP classes for use with the Entrez API. They give easy access to the NCBI databases, including PubMed, PubMed Central, OMIM, and the various *omics databases. The library is currently primitive, but under active development. Because PHP is one of the easiest languages to learn and is in very widespread use, it is hoped that PET may give those without extensive programming skills the ability to quickly produce useful services.\nPET services\n\nFive publically available services currently run with PET:\n\nAssEd:\n The semi-automatic assistant editor: a device for comparing multiple pubmed search results in order to find authors in common between them. Use when you are searching for an author who has published on two or more subjects, but where it is not important whether the two subjects occur in the same paper.\nOAFF:\n The open-access friend finder: a device for searching PubMed Central and returning a list of the most-published authors on a particular topic (or location). Use when searching for those authors in a field who most friendly toward open-access publishing.\nTiPS:\n Trends in Publishing Science: a device for creating graphs to show monthly trends in PubMed depositions for a particular topic, journal, location, etc.\nPubMed Cloud:\n A toy which runs a PubMed search and then generates the HTML for a word cloud from all of the abstracts in that search.\nAuthor Profile:\n Displays somebody's PubMed record, but with useful statistics and trends. You can use it from the search box on the left, or from the links in AssEd and OAFF results.
