| Q:How does Simpy help me? Why should I use Simpy? |
A:
There are lots of good reasons for using an online bookmark manager,
and especially social bookmarking service like Simpy. Here are just
some of the good reasons for using Simpy:
|
| Q:Why should I use Simpy and not del.icio.us? |
| A: There are lots of reasons for using Simpy instead of del.icio.us. Some of the reasons are listed in the 10 Reasons for Simpy vs. del.icio.us post. You can also see what others think about Simpy in user testimonials. |
| Q:How can I use Simpy for Internet Marketing, SEO, and to get traffic? |
| A: In short, Simpy is not meant for Internet Marketing. It is also not meant for SEO (whitehat, blackhat, or any other coloured hat). Simpy is also not for generating traffic. Simpy has aggresive software tools that catch people misusing Simpy, trying to market their site, articles, or blogs. On Simpy, such behaviour is seen as spamming. People caught trying to spam Simpy in this way regularly get their accounts zapped and their sites blacklisted (read: nobody else will be able to bookmark them on Simpy). Simpy also uses nofollow for all its outgoing links, so posting spam to Simpy does not count towards PageRank or any other link-based system (see nofollow announcement). |
| Q:How can I post my articles or blog posts on Simpy |
| A: In short, Simpy is not meant for posting articles. It is also not meant to be a blog promotion material. In other words, do not post your articles on Simpy and do not post each and every blog post you write to Simpy. This misuse of Simpy is seen as spamming. | Q:What is a Bookmarklet? |
|
A:
From Wikipedia:
A bookmarklet is a small JavaScript program that can be stored as a URL within a bookmark in most popular web browsers, or within hyperlinks on a web page. Because Internet Explorer uses the term favorites instead of bookmarks, bookmarklets are also less commonly called favelets by users. Bookmarklets can be saved and used like normal web page bookmarks. Therefore, they are simple "one-click" tools that can add substantial functionality to the browser. |
| Q:I can't drag Simpy bookmarklets on my Internet Explorer Links toolbar. Help! |

If dragging the bookmarklet doesn't work, try the following:
|
| Q:How do I enable JavaScript in my Internet Explorer? |
| A: Very clear instructions for doing that, along with helpful screenshots, are available here. |
| Q:Is Simpy available in my language? |
| A: Simpy is available in: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brasil), Korean, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. If your language is not supported, please help me translate Simpy into your language. All translators are given credit on the Contributors page. If you can help with translation, please let me know. To get the version of Simpy in any of the supported languages, please add the desired language to your browser by following these instructions. |
| Q: What Firefox extensions are available for Simpy? |

Several Firefox add-ons are available:
|
| Q: How do I add bookmarks to Simpy? |
| A: Use the 'Simpy This' Bookmarklet. |
| Q: How do I use tag auto-complete? |
A:
|
| Q: How do I delete my bookmarks? |
A:
There are several ways to delete bookmarks:
|
| Q: How do I import my existing bookmarks to Simpy? |
| A: Use the Bookmark Upload tool. |
| Q: How do I export my Simpy bookmarks? |
| A: Bookmarks can be exported from the Tools page. Currently, Simpy exports to the Mozilla and Internet Explorer format. Bookmarks in this format can be imported by most web browsers. If this format does not work for you, and you would like to export to other formats, please let us know. |
| Q: Why doesn't Simpy support categories (aka folders or hierarchies)? |
| A: Categories are useful only if you have a small number of bookmarks. Once you have more than a few hundred bookmarks, finding the right category->sub-category->sub-category for a new bookmark becomes difficult and slow. Similarly, when you need to find a previously bookmarked page, it is difficult to remember where you stored it. Moreover, since a bookmark often fits in several categories, it is difficult to assign it to only one category. Simpy solves this problem by allowing you to label your bookmarks with tags and optional titles, which makes it possible for you to easily locate them though Simpy's search feature. |
| Q: How do I search my Simpy bookmarks? |
|
A:
Use 'Search Simpy' Bookmarklet
with any browser, or Simpy Search Plugin
with Gecko-based browsers (Mozilla, Firefox, etc.).
You can also use Simpy Sidebars. |
| Q: What search syntax is supported? |
A:
Simpy supports a rich search sytax:
|
| Q: What search fields can I use? |
A:
You can use the following 5 fields in your searches:
|
| Q: What are '- ~ +' operators in the Refine Your Search box and how do I use them? |
A:
By clicking on -, ~, or + you can easily modify
your last query by excluding, adding, or requiring tags.
|
| Q: How do I let people search my links from my blog? |
A:
Just include the following snippet into your blog and replace
YOUR-SIMPY-USERNAME-HERE bit with your own Simpy username.
<form method="get" action="http://www.simpy.com/simpy/User.do"> <input name="username" value="YOUR-SIMPY-USERNAME-HERE" type="hidden"> <input name="q" size="20" value="" type="text"> <input value="Search" type="submit"> </form>
|
| Q: What are tags? |
| A: You can think of tags as keywords or labels. Tags help you find groups of links and notes which have something in common. You can assign as many tags as you wish to each link or a note. Tags may contain spaces, but must be separated by commas (e.g. restaurant, New York City, food, dinner). Although you can use common English words such as to, the, in, at, my, and others for your tags this is strongly discouraged, as we may remove such words from tags in the future. |
| Q: How do I enter single-word and multi-word tags? |
A:
To enter single-word tags, just enter them as individual words
separated by commas. To enter multi-word tags, just enter them as
separate words, and use a comma to separate them from other tags. If
you are entering only one multi-word tag, append a comma at the end,
so Simpy knows you really want a single multi-word tag, and not two
tags. Here are some examples:
|
| Q: What are Notes? |
| A: Simpy's Notes let you save free-text memos of arbitrary length. They are private, taggable, and searchable from the main search box present on all Simpy pages. You can use Notes any way you like - for shopping or to-do lists, for storing bits of information you don't want to lose in your email Inbox, for recipes, for wishlists, people's birthdays, for storing snippets of text you find online and want to preserve somewhere, and so on. Because you can full-text search your Notes, you will always be able to find information stored in them. To add Notes quickly and easily from your browser, get the Note This! bookmarklet. Similarly, to find a Note you previously saved in Simpy, use the Search Notes bookmarklet. |
| Q: Are my Notes public or private? |
| A: Your Notes are private. Only you can see them. |
| Q: What search fields can I use? |
A:
You can use the following 3 fields in your searches:
|
| Q: What are Groups? |
| A: Groups let you share your bookmarks with a select group of people. Whenever you bookmark a new page to Simpy, you will have the option to add that bookmark to one or more of your Groups. Other Group members will be able to do the same. Thus, you can use Groups to collaborate with others and share bookmarks. |
| Q: How do I create a Group? |
| A: Creating a new Group is easy, just go here and enter your Groups name, description, and a few privacy settings. Remember to invite others to your to your new Group! A Group without other members is uninteresting. See Who can I invite to my Group?. |
| Q: Who can I invite to my Group? |
| A: Groups without other members are not very interesting. To make the best use of Groups, you should invite others to join your Groups. You can invite anyone - your colleagues, your friends, your family, and so on. The invitees do not have to be existing Simpy members - just use their email addresses to invite them. |
| Q: What are Watchlists? |
| A: Watchlists are your subscriptions to other users. By creating a Watchlist and adding one or more users to it, you can watch "over the shoulders" of other Simpy users, as they save links. To help you keep up with new links in your Watchlists, Simpy keeps track of new links that you have not yet seen and alerts you when a Watchlist has new links. Each Watchlist also has its feed, so you can subscribe to the feed using your favourite feed-subscription application instead of having to visit Simpy. You can create any number of Watchlists, and each Watchlist can contain any number of Watchlist Filters. |
| Q: What are Watchlist Filters? |
|
A:
Each Watchlist can contain zero or more Watchlist Filters. A Watchlist Filter represents
a saved search, which lets you filter out unwanted links, and
focus only on links that trully interest you.
For example:
You may be interested in Marine Biology, so create a Watchlist called 'Marine
Biology'. As a part of Watchlist creation, you find Simpy users who share this interest and add
them to your 'Marine Biology' Watchlist. The next day you realize that these users
have other hobbies and collect links about those hobbies. Unfortunately, their hobbies are of no
interest to you. These links create noise in your 'Marine Biology' Watchlist, so
you create a Watchlist Filter in order to get only the links that you are
interested in - those about Marine Biology. A Watchlist Filter consists of a name, and a query. For your
'Marine Biology' Watchlist you may create a Watchlist Filter with a query +shark
-cooking, which will find only links that are about sharks and do not mention
cooking. Similarly, you could create a query such as +(shark OR dolphin OR
turtle) -snorkle -vacation, which would find links that talk about the three
mentioned animals, but are not about snorkling nor vacation.
To construct queries use the familiar search
syntax and search fields.
|
| Q: How can I edit my Watchlist Filters? |
| A: You have to remove your Watchlist Filter and then re-add its modified version. You can, of course, choose to add a new Watchlist Filter first, and then remove the old one. |
| Q: How do I search my Watchlists? |
| A: You can search each of your Watchlists by creating a Watchlist Filter. |
| Q: How can I put my bookmarks widget on my blog? |
| A: Easy! Once you add the Simpy widget to a page (or blog), the Simpy link widget will pull your links from Simpy and show them embedded in your page. This is a great way to share your bookmarks with your readers. To get the widget, go to Link Widget for your Blog. |
| Q: How can I get the RSS or ATOM feed? |
| A: Please see the Feeds section of Simpy APIs. |
| Q: Where can I talk to other Simpy users? |
| A: You can find a community of Simpy users on simpy-user mailing list. You can use it to exchange tips, tricks, opinions, post feature requests, or anything else related to Simpy. |
| Q: Where can I talk to other Simpy hackers? |
| A: You can find a community of Simpy hackers on simpy-dev mailing list. You can use this list to announce your hacks and apps, ask questions about the Simpy API or feeds, to exchange tips, tricks, code, etc. |
